And let us assume that microbial life is the explanation we are or, better, NASA is going for. What then ? Will this radically change the focus of Mars exploration ? Are we then going to search frantically for said microbes ? And if so: how ? And when ? And where ?
Interesting, as I suspect that at least part of the development of robotics, for the coming years, may be in the exoskeleton field. Exoskeletons may be very useful, and not only for paralyzed people: they can provide extra power for astronauts, soldiers on the battlefield they could provide - when nimble enough - with both extra power and armour, etc. etc.
Sad, as I have seen here in Europe what happens when universities "step into the market": dramatic reductions in quality, both of teaching and research, are quite often the consequence. Neo-liberalism is still driving us into places where we, actually, are loath to go.
Hm. You quite craftily inverted my argument, to show that what is true for Mona Lisa may also be true for Enterprise. I'll grant you that point. Insulting me, OTOH, is not a major contribution to this discussion. I, last but not least, do certainly NOT believe that you are a troll, which belief may be unjustified. I do believe, however, that this discussion merits to be deepened, whatever you may be. I suppose this proves beyond reasonable doubt I am not a troll. Can you prove you are not one ?*
You are comparing apples to pears. "Enterprise" is a chunk of metal and carbon that, granted, had its part in human space exploration. Being a chunk of metal and carbon, however, it can be replaced; and if it were to go lost, not many humans would spill tears over it. Mona Lisa, on the other hand, is a work of art, with "art" in the sense of "created for beauty", hundreds of years old and held dear by many more humans than said chunk of metal and carbon. Moreover, Mona Lisa was crafted by an individual now long dead and of reputed genius, which can not be said of Enterprise. Last but not least, I do believe that in the wake of Sandy ravaging New York, there is more important news than damage having been done to a chunk of metal and carbon. QFD.
...under the premise that no individual can be held responsible, by any kind of state of the surveillance or police type, for what others do. But wait. Let's turn this argument around. If technology did exist to ensure that no individual could be held responsible for what either he or others do, then this would be quite the act of opposition to the states you and I live in: Western European states, the USA - i.e. surveillance and police states.
Georgia recently provoked war with Russia. Couldn't win. Now they are trying it this way. Won't win either. It's hard to be a former Soviet SSR and trying to get out of Moscow's gravity, ain't it ?
You sound like conspiracy theory incarnate. Take some sound advice, dude: when you get up tomorrow morning, use Occam's razor. You'll be amazed at how clean and neat you look without all these nonsensical hairs sticking out from your brains.
It is quite refreshing and thought-provoking to read such a comment on Slashot, of all places. I tend to wholeheartedly concur with girlintraining. My European vantage point must have something to do with that. No industry, when growing beyond a certain size, can go without regulation for a long time and still be governed by something that looks and smells like "ethics". The role of the state is NOT only to protect the weak - it is, also, a role to reign in the strong. We have known that since the Romans, more specifically since the attempts of more than one emperor to regulate the worst excesses in Roman economy ( Diocletian, most of all ). To ignore this is to deliberately let the lions' cage open, backstage in a circus full on unsuspecting public.
Just plain wrong. You can stick ECC RAM into a desktop; the desktop computer will simply ignore the ECC bits, and use the RAM as if it were of the common desktop variety.
Well, you might want to downplay it. Still - one may safely assume that none of these kiddies had ever been so much as exposed to tech, even less to handling a tablet computer by themelves. One may also safely assume that these kids were illiterate when receiving the equipment.
If the story conforms to reality, this is great news, not only by its entertainment value. It throws an optimistic eye upon what human beings can do, are willing to learn and can adapt to. No, teachers are not going to be pushed into obsolescence for a long time yet, the interesting part of this story, to me, is with these Ethiopian kiddos. Who would not, anyway and prolly, have been reached by any teacher for quite some time.
In my native Europe as much as in your great & free US: More surveillance state. More police state. More security craze. Where is this going to stop ? When are ordinary, yet intelligent people going to refuse to live in and contribute to such a state ?
I grew suspicious on seeing the name "Deloitte" in the association's name. That is one more organisation preying on already cash-strapped government institutions, by sending in 25-years old with the roaring title as "consultants" for exorbitant fees. You always see where the corpses are by paying attention to where the vultures gather.
Usually I don't reply to ACs. This is an exception. As an Austrian resident ( and an atheist pig, to top it off ) I can not but wholeheartedly concur. Where are my mod points ??
...where absolute conformity and submission to the machinery of bureaucracy and state surveillance is a precondition for being able to function for any and every citizen. The police state is strengthening its grip upon us. Upon you. Upon me.
Individual's sharp-mindedness against corporate stupidity. Happens all the time. I'm proud to be an individual having studied mathematics, even if I landed in IT later on...

Hm. Your penis might be able to work on the screen. Yet.... using it as a mouse ? I am bit skeptical there.
Here in Austria there is a saying: "You are looking for a woolly egg-laying milk sow". You actually might be.

Slow news day, samzenpus ? "News for nerds, stuff that matters..." This is neither news for nerds, nor does this stuff matter.
...and doing nothing more than his or her job: to ensure that the state enforces that which by law it must enforce. Period.

Iranian PressTV has been recently banned from UK. Does West really differ so much from China in this regard ?
Nope. You finish up being similar to what you combat.
