    It's not like anything I use is particularly time critical though...I can just start compiling before I go to bed and then 99% of the time it's done by the morning.

    Uhhh...what?

    Gentoo is already on a livecd, which you boot from. Then you chroot into your hard drive for the install. Is that sort of what you meant?

    It's not gonna screw with your hard drive, that shouldn't be anything to worry about.

    And from my experience, yes, the time I spend compiling stuff is worth it for all the learning and flexibility in the end.

    But others may disagree.

    ...rather than have 'releases', there's just a whole lot of software which can be used in any combination from the get-go.

    Yeah same here...although I'm on Linux, so not vulnerable.

    The other day, someone just said to me "Go to http://cant.remember.domain/somepath/something.pif ".

    10 Seconds later so did about 5 other people.

    So I download the file, run file on it, and sure enough, it's a PE.

    Sent messages saying "WTF??? DID YOU CLICK THAT?? IT'S A VIRUS, WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU??" abounded :)

    You can't make a perfect person.

    For example: I'm much taller than most people. But because of that, I have spinal problems. I'm sure that other things like that will happen if you try to engineer more muscle onto people, etc. etc.

    As much as I would like to see lots of chicks with DD tits, they probably wouldn't want to (spinal problems for example, and many people would start to treat them as a sex object).

    Is a genetic disposition for intelligence all that different from an expensive education? Both are ways to give a child a 'leg up' in life, by giving them greater ability

    An expensive education might give more knowledge, but the intelligent one can figure out things for him/herself.

    They try, but I don't buy them, nor do any of my friends (except for like Green Day and Jet...they are some of the few good bands which are/were on the charts).

    There's gotta be someone here who buys them though...if our chimp is any representation of our population, then there must be a HUGE market.

    No, I've checked, no-one over here is buying it. It's gotta be you guys over in the US.

    All of the teenage girls I know would be ashamed to be seen with most of the music up there.

    Because Microsoft is using its monopoly power to gain a monopoly in the other segments?

    If reading source code takes you out of your current objective, you have a write-only view of programming, and that's a problem

    Or it could be that you're reading code which isn't in your program flow. Which means you need to hold more in memory.

    As one of the teenagers out there, I'd have to say that we're not the ones buying the shit which always makes the charts (most of it...Green Day is the main exception that I can think of). I feel that someone else should be to blame.

    He said to compile with "-fwritable-strings".

    I don't know if VC has an option for it, but what it does is allow you to write to string constants. Without it, it will segfault.

    Security is never perfect. Security holes are not completely preventable. If you had a scheme like this, most programmers would be cut off from the internet.
