In that case I suggest posting a question on our own forums (not/.ed yet) explaining which bit of the playlist section in the manual has you confused, and we'll do our best to help you out.

That may be so with the library on your PC - but it's not true of the music iTunes sends to your iPod - which is kept in a bizarre folder hierarchy, and all the files are renamed to weird four character combos like FFRQ.m4a, so you have no idea which artist / album they belong to.
While you can use Rockbox on the 5G ipods to playback video using the MpegPlayer plugin (not based on mplayer as other comments suggest) and MPEG 1/2 format movies, we actually recommend still using the Original Firmware (OF) for movie playback (which is fine, since Rockbox allows you to dual boot back to the old OF whenever you like). This is because the 5Gs include a hardware video processor which no public specs are available for, and which Rockbox is therefore unable to use. It far outperforms our software video rendering sadly.
Be careful to make sure that any of the sansa's you pick up this way are version 1.0 of the hardware. There is a v2.0 which replaced all of the internals which (currently) won't run Rockbox.
www.froobi.com (if you're in the USA/Canada) certify their sansas as "Rockbox ready" so you *know* you're getting the right hardware version.
1) Apple have hacked their MSC mode on the classic to completely hide the firmware partition away.
2) The firmware itself, once you get to it, is encrypted - which means you can no longer run your own code on the Classic (and other models of ipod since the second gen Nano).
Definitely. I use my ipod as my primary player with Rockbox (although I have five compatible models!) and it's not locked up on me once in two years of usage now.
The battery life for *most* of the ipod range is now superior to the original firmware, and the remaining models are on a par with it.
We already have our own USB stack for mass storage which will work on the sansas (and other portal player based targets), but we've had issues with it when used with SD cards plugged into the unit, which is why it's not currently enabled by default. Of course work is progressing to fix these issues.
This hasn't been possible since the Second Gen Nano. Apple are now encryptng the firmware on the iPods too - which previously they hadn't. So an alternative OS on your shiny new iPod, be it iPodLinux or Rockbox is also not possible.
We have Reuter's Messaging here too - but it doesn't quite fill the same space as MindAlign - it's not a group chat system - there's no concept of channels - it's just a rebadged MSN as far as I can tell - on a private network.
Yeah, MindAlign is a very useful tool.
It's essentially a hack IRC server which stores conversations from all "managed" channels in a backend database. Very recent conversation history is available in the client as soon as you login (typically around 100 lines worth) - anything you want to see from further back is available via a web front end to a search tool, which basically allows you to look back through all conversations to the time when the server was switched on.
I've been involved with implementing several versions of it for the bank where I work - and I quite like it as a communication tool. Parlano themselves are reasonably helpful - not something I can say about a lot of vendors to be honest!
I'm sure you already spotted this - but "poking new notches in belt = losing weight" because you've got it cinched up as tight as it will go already, if you have to buy a new *bigger* belt, then you're putting it on - which I think is what you meant...
Damn I'm a pedant.
Incorrect. For the latter part of the journey, you use the thrust of the sails to slow you down. You furl them up when you get there.
I'm not sure I understand how slowing down using the sail is possible. Isn't the solar wind always blowing outward from the sun ? How do you use this to slow down once you've reached the halfway point to Pluto ?
I dunno - check out the ones I wrote after that one:)
I do know I should have used "they're" - but I never seem to type the right thing when I'm going at speed. Hassle Malda for a spelling / grammar checker
Why does Mankind need the QII HyperDrive ? They're not deciding to leave the galaxy because the radiation front won't reach earth for 50,000 years or so. They figure they can invent it on their own, or something better in the meantime.
And why would any of that be relevant to the story as portrayed in a TV show on the Ringworld ? You'd only need to know it if you wanted to read up more on Known Space, in which case, you'd find out anyway.
Have read the manual...

Unfortunately with the Zune, M$ fixed the security hole that Toshiba left on the Gigabeat S, and it will no longer run custom code :(
Much better than previous versions of Rockbox, and on some ipods, *slightly* better than the original firmware.

Read the manual ? It's very comprehensive.

Ahem: "Damn, I'm a pedant." ;)
:)
It's good to see there are people afflicted worse than I though!

I like the fact that there's the no smoking sign, but there's an ashtray with a lit cigarette in it on the desk in the foreground. Nice work.
That was a superb explanation - I get it now - thanks very much!

Let me get this straight - you "got used" to logging in as root? And to compound your folly, you used to do it over *TELNET* ?!?!?!
I think someone needs to read up a bit more on why both these things are bad ideas - and why doing them both at once is just internet suicide...
Especially since the only people who should have access to /etc/shadow should be the people with root on the box.
Joe bloggs on his shell account isn't going to be able to get it is he ?
That "Use Simple File Sharing" Option is only available in XP Pro - not Home. It's certainly not visible here at any rate.
That's news to me - I think you have me confused with someone else :)
Unless you know more about my bookshelves than I do...
I dunno - check out the ones I wrote after that one :)

Ok - I bow out to the greater Niven Fan here :)
I await Ringworld's Children with interest.
