What kind of argument is this? Isn't Windows hyped? Levis? The US? Steven Spielberg? And how would Linux kill itself? Won't Linus have to shoot everyone? Not that I think Linux is all that great, but comments like these make me wonder what reason that is for:-)
just split it up. slashdot is big enough now to be split up in two sites. just randomly put topics on one or the other. one.slashdot.org two.slashdot.org. This solution is scalable to higher numbers and probably may work great, especially when the userbase is compatible with all sites.
Why would Microsoft suffer from this? It has money to make money from; software shouldn't be interesting to them at all IMO.
If you're planning on killing Microsoft, then kill Bill Clinton first (metaphorically speaking, you'll have to push some 150,000 others down a large staircase too -- hey, I here someone knocking on the door), not Bill Gates.
And what's wrong with Microsoft anyway? It's a great company, why else would it get all our money?
It'd be somewhat more appropriate to ask what's wrong with capitalism:-)
Bye, and thanks for your interest

Do not forget that we, the people, make this world. Personally, I do not intend to limit myself to please some less competent person, who would like me to be equally stupid. In the end, I do not think any surviving insect is interested in human intellectual property anyway:)
Just code and have fun. The problem I think here is that there are a lot of kids who want to make their own games. They don't have the skills to do anything but shout and plan a new game. That's one side of the misconception. The other is that one should not try to make money with open source software.
Hi. We have this great idea. We write a virtual president that can rule the world, using advanced artificial intelligence techniques. We need YOU to write the code, because all we know is how to design slashdot replies.
Just let them play. They may have great technology, so let them have fun with it. All the open source community can do is learn from and by that way destroy the corporate world. The task is getting easier each and every day. Look at the bright side:) Oh and I'd really like to stick out my tongue to the BeOS team. Bleh!:P:) Drawing attention away from a great concept like open source should get you arrested in the first place.:)
Why is Transmeta so secret and closed? I do not think this is a 'cool' company. Some people will object that hardware companies cannot open up. In order to make profits they have to keep things as secret as possible, or else someone else who has the time and money will release the ideas first in a usable product.. Is this bad for us customers? No of course not, it would be *great*. I do not think Transmeta earns respect by having open-source folk inside. It's just another company, and the arrogant way in which they act disgusts me. Sorry Transmeta, your commercial does not work for me.
