With distro's like Mandrake, Suse, and Redhat all starting to charge some cash for their production releases, are more people starting to look to alternatives such as Gentoo and Debian?

Actually I'd love to pay for Mandrake, the only problem is that the product life is damn to short .. 18 months for something I want to install onto production servers is wayyyy to short ..

Even the 3 year Mandrake "Corporate Server" is a bit young death for my liking ..

What I would like is something with a 5-6 year product life that could be bought under support contract.

I have raised this issue both in the mandrakeclub and with our Linux support company who has some connections to Mandrake, but so far, nothing has come out of it ..

I'd realy love to use Mandrake but so far SuSE looks like the best choice for a production server.

You are absolutely right. There is often a lot of information in the question itself, if you have access to it.

To get the full picture, you would need access to all communication between the entity that asked for the study to be done, and the company that did the study. From the moment they asked for it, and until it was released. Without that information the situation can be like "Yeah, okay the answer is 42, but what was the question again ?"

Even if you're driving at 200 km/h, your head's speed towards the ground is 0 m/s, if you fall, your helmet is only going to hit the ground at the speed it has gained while you fell from your bike.

Even if you are driving at 200 hm/h and are wearing leathers, unless you hit a obstacle, your head is going to be just fine. You are likely to get some burns from the heat that was generated by friction with the ground (through your leather protection). But little what won't heal in a few days or weeks.

Take Half Life for example and look at how many people are playing Un-MODed HalfLife today .. Not many .. The ONLY reason Valve is still selling HalfLife, is because of the MODs..

And how does that support your statement that quality is determined by the manufacturer ??

Your almost 100 year old quotation from Webster did nothing to support your argument (and I have absolutely *no* clue as to why you copied the whole thing.)

Unfortunately modern day books in economics are not freely availible on the Internet. So I found you this text from: http://www.issco.unige.ch/ewg95/node41.html

"The quality of use, on the other hand, refers to the extent to which the product meets the requirements that result from the purpose for which the product is to be used. The consumer's purpose can be derived from their needs and the ways in which the consumer uses a product in daily life. From this point of view, the concept of the user of a product is very closely related to that of quality. "

As I already pointed out, a low quality widget may be accepted by a consumer as a high quality solution, but that's only out of ignorance. It's not until a high quality solution is made available or presented to the consumer that he can begin to understand the difference of a high quality and low quality widget and truly judge the appropriateness, let alone estimate the quality.

You claim that "Quality" of a thing is somehow build into it and cannot change, and in the next sentance you claim that when a superior solution is made available, the quality of the first is reduced (which is what I am claiming since it's the consumer who defined quality.)
