Does the University of florida sell CDs? Is the drop in CD sales affecting the sources of income for the University of florida? If not, isn't this a stupid comment?
Not realy. A system like this costs money, both to implement and run. And unless school officials are looking for ways to get fired, they have a realy good excuse for those expenses (read: "RIAA is behind this")
Wow. I haven't read anything this stupid in some time.
Hold on a sec, I'l quote a few..
According to you, only idiots can rate other idiots.
A guy who once said " Quality is defined by best practices and standards as accepted by the peers of it's creaters." And it wasn't me:-)
Ask an engineer about the quality of your bridge design and it's construction.
Yes, and he would ansver me about the quality of the *design and construction* of the bridge. The quality of the *design and construction* of the bridge is how well is fullfills the expectations (call for tender) of those who asked for it to be built. I.e. the city or the state (the buyer). The *design and construction* of the bridge has to include things such cost, materials and architechture, and when you ask Joe sixpack about the quality *of the bridge* he won't be answering the same question.
What a crappy bridge. The idiots that are using it are begging to fall to their death. This thing is a disaster waiting to happen." So, who do you listen to?
You are not only asking a different question but also to people with different background to answer each question, so of course the answers won't be the same.
You could just as well ask the Engineer if the bridge was high quality and then ask the contractor (who knows about all the bad practices that were used in the building). You could get different answers for exactly the same reason.
In plain english : If the bridge crumbles down, because it was badly built, it doesn't change a thing about the quality of the bridge. Only how well people know about it.
So, go enjoy you ignorance and crappy bridges, meanwhile, I'll enjoy quality, and live.
If you realy belived what you are saying, you wouldn't know quality..
Right...and if you used a "best practice" on something that didn't apply, it would no longer be "best practice", now would it. Thusly, my statement is still intact.
You missed an important part of the comment you were replying to,... for which the practice is accepted to be best.
Meaning that "best practice" is being used to try to get "quality". But it is still the consumer that defines the quality.
Take a look at the ISO 9001 standard. It works by continuosly going back to the consumer and then tracing backwards through the manufacturing process and verifying that each step is fulfilling the requirements for the next step, in front of it, in the best possible way. In other words, "Quality" is a "product" of "Best practices". And "Quality" is defined by the next step in front of it, therefore the quality of the end product is defined by the consumer.
You are confusing "Technically better" with "Quality". A product can be "Technically better" for some purpose, but if it is not that technic that the consumer wants, it's still lower quality.
Quality is defined by best practices and standards as accepted by the peers of it's creaters.
Let's assume that you are right, that would mean that quality of cow shit would be defined by cows ??? But the cow doesn't know the first thing about how it can be used as a fertiliser.
Economics has a definitition of 'quality' (which you will hopefully learn later in school), that goes something like "How well the product fulfills the consumers expectation for that product".
So you see, claiming that quality is defined by someone else than the consumer is simply blowing hot air out of your arse.
I use PostgreSQL extensively, and I have had a hard time convincing my-mySQL (I'm so clever) exclusive friends to give it a try.
Maybe, just maybe that's because your-SQL friend is having absolutely no problems with hiSQL and is simply too busy going forward with his life instead of bitching about what tool he should use on the problem.
Never forget that "quality" is defined by the user, not the manufacturer.
If you could go back in time with the knowledge you have to day, and live the dot-com years for a second time. What would you change in RedHat's business model ?
Ritz has an honest business model, and consumers shouldn't download their own pictures from the camera.
How can anyone claim that a company that bases it's business on a law that forbits fair use and how people can use things they buy in their own homes as "Honest" ???
It may be "Legal" but if it's one thing it's not, it's "Honest" !!
IBM is actually trying to get some facts with their subpoenas, like offending source code. What does SCO think they are going to get out of Linus?
SCO want's Linus to do their work for them.
SCO wants the name and address of every person that has contributed code to the Linux kernel in order to match the list they have from companies that have signed NDA with SCO.
If a match is found, SCO will claim that is the code in question.. (Today SCO has no fucking clue about if they realy have a case or not.)
Every click subtracts from your already-paid-for page views. You have already purchased them.
Sorry, but you purchase the *right* for ad-free page views. It's a kind of 'right tokens', like purchasing stamps. And those tokens have value just like stamps or bus tickets since you use them to buy a service.
You have already purchased the token but you still haven't purchased the ad-free page until you click on "Read more".
In any way, you are poorer after spending your token.
Since that is not enough, you decide to pick on somebody else. Let's see...who might be using Linux that should just roll right over again....Oh, I know....Hollywood!!!
Somehow I have this Image of SCO as a small dog who walks around and barks at people, checking which of them will drop something he can eat..
It may be funny for the first or two barks, but it has gotten pathetic and I'm just waiting for someone to put the poor bastard out of his misery.
If you control an MX, please configure it to issue a 550 error during the connection if you can't deliver the message instead of accepting it and then bouncing to what you almost certainly know is an innocent party.
I can tell you that the problem is all but easy to fix.
Not only do our Postfix servers (On the DMZ) have to accept mail to Exchange accounts (Servers on a different inside-DMZ) without knowing what accounts exist, but also for other mail servers we have no control over. For example, we send incoming emails back out over VPN tunnels to Japan, Germany and Washington without having the slightest clue or control over what accounts exist over there.
Before, I used to work for a big ISP that only serviced companies and the setup was similar there, we had this huge Sun Enterprise cluster to accept incoming email for our clients, and then sent the emails to each customer's dedicated server without having any control over them.
That's why some people refer to the US "Legal system" instead of "Justice System".
I'm not claiming that you have the right to make copies of things you buy, or listen to your music where you want, or go to the toilet during commercials... Uhh, wait a minute, there is something clearly wrong here..
If the crazyness doesn't stop in pumping up how much criminal you are for copying a song or two, I fear that future wars may be fought over Wild MP3 Distributors (WMD's).
One of the best responses ever to this topic was penned by Senator Jim Inhoffe (R - OK). A constituent sent him a post card with no name, but a return address on it that said, "Legalize drugs." He had a staffer go down to the Senate gift shop and buy a postcard. He simply wrote "No." on it, signed it, and had it sent to the return address
How can anyone claim that "No" can ever be a good ansver on highly debated issue. It doesn't even begin to address the problems at hand and it smells of arrogance and the "Because we are all powerful" attitude.
Well, the phrase having links to terrorist organisations keeps popping up as a vague but severely incriminating description in the media.
During the latest fund-raising meeting that George helt along with his henchmen I heard (on CNN I think) that the USA now had the proof that Iraq had had in place a "process of creating a WMD program"..
fair use does not give anyone the right to make an exact copy - such as would be the case when a digital broadcast signal is transmitted.
You don't get it, rights (fair or not) are *taken* not *given*. I.e. You can do whatever is not illegal to do. (almost) And it would be silly to take away your right to make a backup copy of a software you have bought (as every bacup program does).
The rest of your comment is also pure BS, you have no idea what you are talking about, fair use does include the right to make 100% exact digital copies, simply because it is not stated otherwise in the law (at least where I live).
The thing about this incident that I find concerning is that this phone exploded in the guys pocket when battery consumption is at its lowest.
1-800-BIGMAMA: "Now put the handset in your pocket, honey, and rub it up and down, YEAH LIKE THIS OHHH YeS YeS BABY GIVE IT TO MEE IM COMING BOOOOMMMM, _______ Huh ?, he just hung up . well another happy customer served.
SCO purchases a Canopy company with newly created shares at a nominal value (yes they have provision for a massive share expansion). The Canopy shareholders - ie Noorda and Yarro then sell the SCO stock at its market price and make a killing.
Exactly what I was thinking yesterday when I was looking at SCO's stock value.
I thought "Hey, it looks like the shit is working to inflate the price, maybe I should buy a few and have some easy money."
But then the little deamon on my shoulder told me "Stupid, you know this story will end by everybody at SCO selling their stock and fleeing the ship as it sinks. You have to know a lot of things you don't, to play that game."
Does the University of florida sell CDs? Is the drop in CD sales affecting the sources of income for the University of florida? If not, isn't this a stupid comment?

RIAA once had a "Study" pointing to a relationshit between online music sharing and declined CD sales around universities.
Therefore, it would bo logical to assume that CD sales would go up after a dragonian system like this was implemented, and surprising if it didn't.
Wow. I haven't read anything this stupid in some time.

Don't open Emails that you have no clue who they came from. This is just common sense
Come one, grow up, we're no longer 6 years old and there is no good reason why we should be forced to live in fear of our emails !!
If a email can do all kinds of bad stuff to your computer, it is the fault of the one who wrote the email software, period..
Don't try to blame the victim because he was simply using the software for what is it supposed to do ...
I use PostgreSQL extensively, and I have had a hard time convincing my-mySQL (I'm so clever) exclusive friends to give it a try.

Since when is "Ranked #2 by USNews" and a link to their site something they'd object to?
And even if they'd object, could they legally do anything ??
Actually, some of the best sites (IMHO) on the Internet, contain only links.

Slashdot subscribers who buy 'n' ad-free articles. When they click on "Read More" isn't that one-click shopping ??

Man, what a misleading headline. For a moment, I had this amusing mental image of fully armed British special forces storming Microsoft headquarters.
The good news is that the British can claim Microsoft has Wicked Microsoft Developers (WMD's) And they **WILL** find them.
See Here!
I also thing the sam thing goes for Pro and Anti-Drugs sites
Anyone have an objection to that ?
Same goes for Hacking Anti-Hacking, Porn & Fight-Porn sites ..
Why shouldn't Pro-Gun sites be classed as such ??

I have been using Firebird for months and I feel fine!
And I have haven't seen a single pop-anything since I installed the Google toolbar.

It's not like you can use corn for anything else, is it ? - like feeding the starving millions in the third world.
The hunger in the world is mostly man-made. Lift the tax barriers, and the third world will feed itself in a few years.
