  1. Re:This really doesn't help... on More on LinDVD · · Score: 1

    These rants always amuse me.

I wonder how you intend to stop EVERYONE from buying DVDs.

  2. I've never played Diablo, and here's why. on Diablo II Beta Sign-Up Monday · · Score: 1

Back in my college days, I was addicting to MUDs and MUSHes. From what I understand, games like Diablo and Ultima Online are graphical, visceral extension of these type of worlds, and horribly addictive. So for me, not signing up for this beta test will be like avoiding a hallucinogenic drug. Then again...maybe I will anyway...:)

  3. Re:Where are the reliable MBs??? on AMD Announces 1GHz Athlon Imminent · · Score: 2

The only reliable motherboard I've heard for Athlon chips is the recently released Asus line of Athlon MBs.

A friend of mine even had core dumps in Linux from his Athlon 800 MHz, until he got the Asus MBoard.

My decision, and I feel it was a wise one, was t oget a P3667 MHz Cu and Slot 1 board. It has reliability, it's cheaper than the very top end, and I know it can do everything I need it to do, in a production environment and in a gaming environment.

I actually don't plan on upgrading for a while, though my computer supports up to 1.2 GHz.

I'm not anti-Athlon, I'm anti-risk (having had a bad experience with my K6-300 having floating point problems). I know my Intel chip and Asus board won't cause me any worries, and I'm willing to pay a little more for that reassurance.

  4. You can play DVDs in Linux without DeCSS! on MPAA Head Valenti on DVD "Hackers" · · Score: 1

Sorry to pop the bubble, but there IS a DVD player for Linux.
Where, do you say? Check out:
    http://opensource.creative.com

There you will find open source drivers for the Creative Labs DXR2 hardware DVD decoder board. So there you go, you can have your DVD player under Linux and not piss off the MPAA. Now only if they would support the more current DXR3 board...

  5. Voice these concerns OFF THE NET / CONVENTION! on Citizen Case, DVD-CCA, Napster, and MP3 · · Score: 1

Tell you what, posting here on Slashdot is like preaching to the choir. The best way to get these concerns out would be to stage a protest. I'm talking a REAL protest, like people in front of a building holding signs. What we need to do, is PRINT OUT these threads, and send them to our local politicians, so that they, in their analog world, can see what is happening here.

I'd be at least willing to draft a petition and print out some signs about how our freedoms are in jeopardy. It's only if we organize OFFLINE that we can make a difference ONLINE..and that's what the corporations are doing right now.

A Slashdot CONVENTION is what is needed.

    Let me know your thoughts.

  10. Obvious solution: voice-to-text on PCS Phone + UP.Browser == Killer App? · · Score: 1

One of the things all these comments are mentioning, is what a pain it is to type in information into a touch tone phone.
Hello? Products like Dragon Naturally Speaking are going to be making this unecessary in the very near future. Speech-to-text applications will make browsing the web on a phone/pilot/what have you much more convenient than it is now.

It's all just a matter of time.

  11. Re:How about with Creative PC-DVD? on The Matrix DVD Troubles · · Score: 1

I have an older Creative Labs Encore DXR2 DVD 2x.
It's up to Encore DXR3 with 6x DVD now, but the latest player and firmware for the 2x drive works FINE. I experienced no problems or choppiness while watching The Matrix on my CLabs DVD drive, and have had very few/no problems with it since their 3.0 player came out.
All the hidden features work, and are much easier to access with a mouse. I also have and recommend the Cambridge Soundworks 5:1 Digital Speakers, as they REALLY strut their stuff on the Matrix's AC-3 encoded sound.
