1. Producing cheap, reliable energy would take all the profits away from big oil, who have Bush in their pocket.
2. Diverting money from this program will help defray the costs of the war.
3. Saying we'll "rely on the global effort" is brilliant- It shows that we're a "global player," yet they probably believe that it won't happen without U.S. effort. (whether or not it's true)
Why, oh why, do they continue to insist on beating this dead horse into the dust?
As was mentioned, the almighty dollar, of course.
But a better question is, "Why Star Trek?" Movie studios are already cranking out loads of bad films, why capitalize on Star Trek? Name recognition, of course. The public doesn't have any imagination to see something new, they want prepackaged stuff that's comfortable, whether or not it's any GOOD.
It's the American way. Sh*t, just look at our president.
The CPU would be pretty bored just running a parking meter. How about it running SETI@Home while the parking timer decrements?

I can't believe I actually paid good money for that DVD. For that matter, I can't believe they wasted the time, money, resources to PUT it on DVD.
This sounds alarmingly like the "Crossbow" project in the movie "Real Genius."
