I use 2 monitors with 4 virtual desktops.... Of course I'm lazy and hate re-opening programs. **puts in her vote for Litestep**

  2. Re:Dead serious is right on Jon Stewart on CNN's Crossfire · · Score: 1

so you're saying that there isn't enough intresting or important news in the world to actually take a good hard look at during non-crisis periods? I don't think so. It would simply meen that CNN would have to do some actual reporting, and not simply follow the rest of the sheep in talking about the same things over and over.

  3. Re:Idiot Jukebox on Centrally-Controlled Home Music System on a Budget? · · Score: 1

That is the reason the question was phrased as it was. The questioner wanted as many things as possible to be automatic, (I.E. auto CD ripping and storage) and yet still able to be configured remotely. He's not trying to set it up so they have to tweek and fiddle, he wants them to be able to walk in, put a CD in the drive, have it rip automatically, and be able to play the resulting file easily. Good interface design for a narrow purpose can VERY easily be explained to the "wrinklier set." *hugs*

actually a good LP has more dynamic range then a CD. If you take care of it well, and use a good needle, it will help take care of some of the audio blemishes that you hear. Yes there is noise, but it doesn't have to be as bad as the stereotype. anyhoo....

    >--snip----snip-- They aren't talking about blocking one port on detection, they are talking about looking at thoes ports then blocking off the ip address of the the detected intrusion. The problem comes when the intuder uses a common site as a spoof address on an attack/scan. The setup described would lock it out.

  7. Re:I must ask... on Getting Your Company to Migrate from IE? · · Score: 1

Have you tried fudging the user-agent string? That particular site may check it to see if your using IE. Err, you probably have. Shutting up on the Geek side of things. On your main question though, "How do I convince managers to switch to FireFox?" The same way you convience anyone to do anything. Talk to them about things THEY care about, not what you care about. Why should they want to switch? Yes FireFox is a better browser. But IE works for what they have been doing and attacking what somoene is used too can put them in a defensive posture. That's not a great way to convience them. Move on. The reason that most managers would perk up is simple. $$$$. Will it Save/Make them money. If you can demonstrate that moving to FireFox will save money, he/she will probably open up their ears a little more. Do a little research, what percentage of your time is used up fixing problems that could have been avoided by using firefox? How much will rolling to FireFox cost in the short term, how much will it save you long term, etc. $$$. It's a managers job.

How does THIS strike you as changed from explorer's bs ugly ass themed interface. Don't knock litestep untill you use it. (and it's not configured by gui... ooooo) but I agree about cygwin. clunky and hella slower on old machines. As much as I'd LOVE to have bash on my windows boxen, it just doesn't run snappy at ALL.

I can see you don't live in the south. Nearly everyone here is GLAD to discuss religion with anyone and everyone that talks with them. As long as it is THEIR religion, and they are trying to convert the person on the other end of the conversation. And if your not religious, or don't live in a way that they find right (both of which apply to me), then they are more then willing to shove their religion down your throat. This is why people react so vehemently to religious discussions on the net. They are simply lashing back at the mindset that they see as hurting them IRL. Doesn't mean they are right, or it's good to do so, but understand that the Atheists in the world are outnumbered, and it makes us mighty skittish sometimes.
