IF that is the case WhyTF does everyone want to point guns at each other? I would posit that while these may have been the same deity in the olden days, that is no longer true. The followers of $DEITY have changed the meaning enough to consider them different. -nB
The brothers were owner/operators. It really is the same thing at this level. If they drove away the customer base by badgering them with religion, they'd be out of business, the same result as being fired: no more income.
Sure, "At Will Employment" is just that, at the (your will && employer's will) == true intersection. That said, if you believed Pi was 3.00 and you dutifully used 3.14 in your calculations, then I highly doubt that your employer would bother using that as the grounds for termination. Logically possible, yes, probable? not so much. -nB
Are you willing to use 3.141592653589 in your equations because your employer requires that constant to be used and not 3.00000000? If so, then you may believe Pi == 3 to be true all you want. If you insist on using 3.00000000000 where your employer wants you to use 3.14... then you may be terminated. IANAL, but this just seems to be common sense. -nB
If he believes in God, Allah, Buddha, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or even Scientology, that is his right. If he insists on pushing that belief on others when they are 'captive' that is not his right. Termination is acceptable, especially of other methods of behavioral modification (written up, demoted, etc.) have not worked.
I once frequented a coffee shop run by a pair of brothers who were Jehovah's Witness. They had literature available, and if you asked they would try to convert you, but they understood that people came to get caffeine, not God, and thus kept it very low key. They ended up closing down for tangentially related reasons (a run-in with the Aryan Brotherhood that went very badly), but they got it, that religion is not barred from the workplace, but must be subordinate to it, in that the focus of a business, or office is to work, whereas the focus of a house of worship is, well, to worship. -nB
Really? My favorite watering hole (a dive, but walking distance when I get pished) has a standing offer to pay cab fair for anyone who's too drunk to drive. I talked to the bartender about it once and he said the cab company gives them a hell of a discount and everyone gets to use it as a tax writeoff. Many bars/cabs will take you home for free or cheaply if you are intoxicated (and polite). We have a local tow company who will even take your car home for you for free on specific holidays (4th, new years, superbowl sunday, and a couple others IIRC).
I handed my keys to my friend once even though he was suspended for DUI (irony there) because he was sober and I was not. I don't know what the cop would have done if we were pulled over, but thankfully we weren't. -nB
no because it would not be used in a machine with disks. This would be used to link two carrier class routers together. The aggregate traffic on both routers would likely be enough to start using this level of bandwidth. Also, likely to be used in transoceanic trunks if they can Tx far enough. -nB
I suppose, but by not being dicks, most people in-turn are not dicks back. Only once have we had a 'dick' issue. We had a tech faking his data and not actually testing. We caught him red handed and he was dressed down for it. We caught him a second time and were going to dismiss him, but he played the race card. Since he was on a time limited contract we simply assigned him make work and paid out the remainder of his time taking his results the same way my mailserver takes bad addressed e-mail::blackhole: Never before and not since have we had an issue like that, even when we've had to dismiss people. Never have we had a "you didn't hire me because I'm (black|gay|female|catholic|muslim|tranny|hermaphroditic|married|single mom|whatever the fuck else people use as an excuse)". We don't generally accept excuses, we expect results, on-time. In exchange we treat people largely like adults (except the SW devs, they're all kindergarteners with PHD's... or cats... can't really pin that one down). -nB
I put it on my resume, and in fact am ok with it being used in the decision. Hmm he has a wife and kids, likely stable, not looking to move, great hire him. or Hmm he has a wife and kids, not likely to want to travel to creation and back for this job, nor willing to work deathmarch hours, maybe we should get someone else.
Either way I think the decision would match my preference. -nB
Sadly that is not the case. I don't need the games. I don't need the albums. I do need the connectivity to my family, half a world away. FB satisfies that need, in a rather unique way. We use FB to schedule meeting times on Skype when we will be available. "I'll be at my computer with Skype and the webcam from 1730 to 1815 GMT on 08 MAR 2012". now anyone who is on my FB friends list and has skype can ring in , see the (grandkids|cousin|neice/nephew). We've had a party line going with 5 different households. The cousins all were hollering and laughing and carrying on while parents and grandparents just sat and watched and enjoyed it. FB is what makes that all simple to schedule across multiple people with vastly different levels of technical experience. -nB
The non cynical golden rule should always apply. Treat others as you would like to be treated. I really think that's all you need in life, and if everyone did that then only the psychopaths would go to war.
I would appreciate feedback if I was looked over for a job, or a promotion for that matter, I assume others would like the same from me. (not that I'm in a position to promote people, a Kingmaker I am not.)
The circuits likely to be impacted would relate to the auto starting functionality. There is enough thermal mass in the cooling ponds to support no circulation for long enough to get a human down there to start them. -nB
Wow... Not very nice people there. When we decline someone we actually give them a list of specific things that they were deficient in when compared to our requirements for the position. We have had multiple people thank us, and one of them came back a year later with two 100 level classes under his belt specific in the area he was deficient in asking for a new interview. We didn't interview him, just hired him (hey you show that kind of initiative then I can find *something* you can do while you learn the rest). -nB
Regardless if I have x or y social media account, I will respectfully and efficiently terminate any interview where social media contact is an issue
It is an issue, but one that does not need your potential employer to have access. They are within their rights to require that you not post company information. To that end they can regulate your social media. In my case that's through an NDA. Since my account is private, they have to take my word for it, but they seem to have the attitude of "if it's private then he won't be telling the world anyway, only his friends". -nB
I've had one interview where they asked me for access to my private profile. I politely asked why, since I have my profile set to private for a reason (it's for family communication only really). Their response was that they wanted to see if I had posted anything negative about my former employer. I said, no that would be silly, it was prohibited by the NDA. They let it drop at that. -nB
Because in the case of grid failure they will run on diesel generators. Which are off and relatively safe until the grid blows, which is after the CME is passed, then they start (even if a delay of manual starting is required, no worries). And in this case there is not a wall of seawater to drown the gennes. -nB
Um... Scratching Tx of my places to move. Stuff like this is also needed for fairly basic chemistry and biological science experiments that are no longer taught in school due to budget cuts.
I had a parent teacher meeting the other day with my daughters teacher and the principal because she was talking about a comparative of Greek and Roman myth in school (apparently she got in a heated argument when someone said she was lying about the Minotaur, King Midas, Cerberus and such...). She is in third grade and reading at somewhere between 6th and 8th grade level books. She has a similar interest level in science, with a bent on explosives (she makes me so proud:). Surprisingly her math skills are abysmal and the only way I've found to interest her is through organic chemistry, and baking, both of which are math heavy. We'll leave the explosives synthesis out till she's 16, if she's still interested then we'll start with how to make your own black powder for the musket. -nB
then nuke it from orbit and disavow ever seeing it. CP is such a charged issue it's simply not reasonable to get involved with it for any reason at any level.
Lets be honest, we're all geeks and would do something to cover our asses. -nB
In that vein, correct 100%. What I didn't really elaborate on is the instant tone change both in body language and verbal word selection/tone once they saw the glassware, one of them actually lowered his hand towards his Tazer! And for the record: couple glass petri dishes box of 30CC test tubes assorted beakers from 250mL to 1L one volumetric flask (500mL) two 500mL Erlenmeyer flasks one 500mL Erlenmeyer vacuum filtering flask with glass funnel. two stands and assorted clamps.
really not all that special. Not like I had a condensing head out (I keep that boxed because it is so fragile)... I think what set them off was the Erlenmeyer flasks. They seem to scream mad scientist to non chemistry people. -nB
Sadly this is true. We were broken into, lived in a seedy part of town, called the PD. They showed up and saw some glassware (what most nerds would consider basic chemistry needs) and assumed I was a drug cooker. I had to dig out all the science kits I bought for my kids and actually show them a basic science experiment (viscoelastic fluid using cornstarch and water), which my children happily explained to them, before they would back off on their obvious intent to arrest me. On the bright side I think the cop that was actually paying attention actually learned that a similar fluid is responsible for his transmission's torque converter functioning properly, as well as the fan clutch for his car's radiator.

Yes, it's called a ring buffer and has a long history, one of the earliest computer memories used this technique.

Well said sir.

Then that means at some level they have made a solid state heat pump that rejects the waste heat as light. /cool
