  1. OUTRIGHT LIE. on Microsoft Reveals 360 Shortage Reason · · Score: -1, Flamebait

    This is an outright lie.

Marketing 101, release a hot-ticket item in LIMITED supply to INCREASE demand and PERCIEVED value of the product then FLOOD the market at a later date.

I don't mind so much as that everyone does it but to make this public excuse statement is offensive.

When you think that the *number one* killer of teens today are Motor Vehicle Crashes, wouldn't it make sense that something that IMPROVES hand-eye coordnation would increase a teen's chance of survival? Just think of the headline, "Video-Games may save your child's life." I'd love for Sony to sponsor a study. It would end this argument forever.

Yes it it Mathmatically grounded, as with chess. The big difference is you can't mark skill by an individual win. A novice backgammon player could beat a grand master level program on a single game. However only the top .001 percent of players could beat that program in a money series to 100 or in any extended point play.

People are worried about playing against computers online. But most professionals analyze their matches with software and watch their back for fishy gameplay that is too perfect. http://www.bgsnowie.com/ is the best tool for analyzing gameplay. It's not trivial to have two computers running and pull of the perfect backgammon game because 95% of the game is played out so fast and organically, there is a certain look and feel to human gameplay. it could be emulated of course, but it's not a trivial scam.

A few steps beyond tic-tac-toe??? That is the 'beauty' of playing backgammon for money. People who have the wrong belief that backgammon is but a simple game anyone could master with a couple of months are commonly refered to as 'piegons'..aka suckers. A great source of income. People who will continuely play masters and lose their life savings blaming it on bad dice rolls and not understanding the immense skill of an opponent who will consistantly win 60-70% of the time. If you are interested in the mathmatics behind good backgammon theory, the book 'Backgammon' by Paul Magriel is a great place to start.. http://www.gammoned.com/books/magriel.html

I've seen friends drop out of society for Online Backgammon. What's really addictive is when money and player to player instant transfers are at stake on backgammon sites like GamesGrid .. I've seen people up $50,000 in an evening and back down before sunrise. If you do persue this route consider picking up the neural network software package 'Snowie' which analyzes your opponent's skill. If you find one who consistantly scores less than you then you can play them for cash over a period of time and enjoy casino odds in your favor which can range from 55-75%.

  7. Re:We already *have* Toy Story graphics on Cinematic Game Graphics · · Score: 2, Interesting

We don't have real-time Toy Story graphics yet because there is no Real-Time Motion-Blur. Pause a dvd of toy story and look at a frame. Compare this to a paused frame on a video game and notice the difference. Until this technique is incorporated you will always notice the difference between CG for the cinema and video games.

  8. What will REALLY matter. on Cinematic Game Graphics · · Score: 2, Insightful

This article only touches on with two words what the REAL graphical revolution will be. That's going to be Real-Time Motion Blur. With all the tech heads clamoring on and on about 60+ FPS as some holy-grail, why are we all so accepting of watching our movies at a paltry 24 FPS and deem that it looks more real than any video game? It's because if you ever pause to look at a frame of your favorite movie in action you'll notice that the image is severely blurred and contains imagery that encompasses not only imagery from that moment in time, but from time before it which is interpolated together. This gives an effect of reality far beyond what any high frame-rate would be capable of. The process is CPU intensive becaue it involves heavily processing the current frame data with the 4-5 frames that occur before it but with low geometry counts it could be done on current systems.. When are developers going to get on the ball and get this tech going???
