Agreed ... but it's a religiously oriented gift from a family that's made it clear that they disapprove of my family's beliefs, and my family has made it clear that we don't care that they disapprove. Occam's razor. Perhaps I should've clarified, though.

So? You're saying you can't type arbitrary text in the dark? I typed this without looking at the keyboard, simply by lining my fingers up with the bumps on the f and j (ok, I cheated to check which letters the bumps were on when I typed that last part).

Not necessarily - if you block off the BIOS (so it can't boot from CD), then physical dismemberment may be required. And that's not hard to watch out for, if people are in the office (compared with a "trusted individual" using Knoppix to access Windows' SAM file).

CoLinux is what you want - it runs in some sort of emulated or pseudoemulated mode, so you don't have to boot (like with Knoppix). Or you could do it the hard (but faster?) way with Bochs and whatever x86 distro you want.

That's why I said "calibrations vary". Plus, I figured I'd keep it simple. Besides, as far as applying to colleges ... they'll often re-calculate your GPA from your raw grades to get rid of the weightings.

Universities aren't accredited so much as their programs are. For example, if you want a bioengineering degree that actually means something, you want a school that is "ABET accredited". They do other engineering stuff, too (ABET="Accredition Board for Engineering and Tech." or sth. like that). And they are certified by CHEA (Council for Higher Ed. Accreditation). Given a college name 30 seconds of Googling will find out if they're accredited in a given field, and by whom.

  20. Re:Me on Too Many Computers Hurt Learning · · Score: 1

    It's a "GPA" (gradepoint average). Calibrations vary, but often it's A+=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0. So a 3.5 is about a low A or high B. Pretty good, better than average, perhaps.

I don't know how hard it is to get a permit in the EU, but (at least as of the late '80s) it is quite difficult to get a foot in the door in the UK. I have a friend who worked as an ESL (English as a 2nd Language) teacher in London, but he worked illegally. Regardless of the high number of illegal workers (white collar workers especially) in England, since they aren't registered with the Home Office in any official way, they have no particular advantages being recognized in the EU proper.
