  1. IE6 already has tabs on IE7 Will Have Tabbed Browsing · · Score: 1

I've been using tabs with IE6 for a while now. Anyone who uses Visual Studio .NET 2002/2003/2005 or recent MSDN versions will know what I mean. It works quite well, nothing grandeous but I'm guessing that's what we'll be getting in IE7 by default.

  2. Re: Security on Persuading A City To Go Wireless? · · Score: 1

I think we should look at 802.11i and the WPA standards as valid solutions to security, they aren't everything they could be I think that security is become less of an issue (now that these standards are popping up on the market). Personally a wireless point is something I use to compliment my wired systems when I'm on the front porch or something, pulling CAT-8 cables all over the place is not my idea of mobility.

  3. Re: ClarkConnect on Replace NAT Box with Commercial Broadband Router? · · Score: 1

I've used a PII-400 Redhat-based ClarkConnect router with dual 100MBit PCI cards before, awesome things, very stable (that's a no brainer), you can plug in anything from VPN, SSH to Apache with KDE for pretty much hardware that costs less on Ebay than anything approaching an acceptable router. I'm using a US Robotics ADSL 9005 router right now, they're decent unless you start your P2Ps, then you're stuck...Had one burn out on me previously. The ClarkConnect distro has a mighty flexible interface for pretty much anything you need. Generally I'd go with a Linux-box because they're usually so much cheaper (even if you buy one today) than some router that's actually worth your time. Your mileage MAY vary though...Loud things!

  4. 3000+ Hear Hear on AMD and Intel Update CPU Roadmaps · · Score: 1

Personally I'm looking forward to dual-cored processors myself. What is the heat rating on the Pentium 3.6Ghz? The heat suggests that the 3.6 would last a fairly short time if we scaled it to older Intel Pentium 4s. Personally I can hit 3.56Ghz with air cooling on a 2.8C Pentium 4, pretty nice. On the other hand it runs at at 50-60C, I assembled a 3000+ on a K8T-FSR, unfortunately MSI still hasn't worked out the fine art of PCI/AGP bus locking with VIA chipsets (at least not on S754), so I'm consigned to running at 2250Mhz, but on stock air cooling, it is doing pretty well, CPU temp is 35C in average. I'd say, AMD is doing something right...

  5. Windows CE developers step forth please? on New Phone Uses WLAN or Cel Networks · · Score: 1

Eh, seriously, I doubt many users commenting here have actually used Windows CE itself because it DOESN'T EXIST!, Windows CE is the core on which Pocket PC 2002, Windows Mobile 2003 and the Smartphone edition is built on. Windows CE does NOT exist as a standalone edition that can be compared. Device vendors make a Windows CE that is unique to each manufacturer and device. That is: Microsoft is not involved in the support of WinCE WHATSOEVER, no service packs, no patches. If you have a Windows CE that is MORE unstable than Windows XP then you are using embedded devices that have some serious driver issues... I've used the Windows CE 3.0 and 4.2 cored Pocket PC systems and I'm pretty satisifed with the direction is going in, bar none the Palm OS is still more efficient, if less technically competent (again OS6 excepted). People seriously need to start thinking before they post uninformed crap...

  6. Re:Next step: run PearPC on that emulated Windows! on Windows 98SE emulated on Pocket PC · · Score: 1

Eh, Bochs is a PC-targeted emulator, if you had taken care to read the posts above you'd know that Bochs emulates an x86 CPU.

Macintosh machines run non x86 cpus, such as the G3, G4 or G5 PowerPCs (Motorola and IBM respectively), in any case the differing architectures prevent this from working on the Bochs emulator, on the other hand, any other such emulation would be out of reach because of the requirements for emulation, I mean old macs can't run OS X, much less a 400mhz PDA...

You can always try PearPC (http://pearpc.sourceforge.net/). Maybe one day...

  7. On the Linux issue on Windows 98SE emulated on Pocket PC · · Score: 3, Informative

Actually you can already run Linux on your favourite Pocket PCs (if there is such a thing), the hp/compaq iPAQs, generally the older Compaq H3600, H3800 and H3900 series accept it.

Unfortunately some of these (there are several) projects seem to be defunct, in any case I fail to see the reason to convert a perfectly normal PPC to a crippled handheld running linux with applications not designed for it. If you need linux, I'd go for the Sharp Zaurus, sweet machines albeit underpowered, and frankly, not NEARLY as polished.

Windows 98 emulation on run-of-the-mill PPCs such as iPAQ 3950, Toshiba e740 or Dell Axim 3xi is a bit impractical however in my opinion, since
    1) low resolution
    2) low functionality
    3) too slow
    4) did I mention low functionality?
    5) expensive memory expansion (Secure Digital cards only for most iPAQs, and Compact flash for Toshiba/Dells)

I applaud the technical level at which this experiment was taken, but like the linux hacks, this is a waste of time on a practical level, unless you need to run Solitaire desktop edition...

To elaborate on speed, for those not familiar with the Pocket PC operating system (Windows Pocket PC 2002 and WMobile 2003), both are platforms based on Windows CE, 2003 being on CE.NET 4.2 and 2002 on CE 3.0; in short, 2003 is optimized for the Xscale CPUs, currently the top rated ARM-compatible cpus for handhelds, 2002 is not. Running Windows 98 in emulation mode would be a pain in 2003, much less in 2002, my 3950(PXA250, initial xscale cpu) can handle the TI-89 emulator, barely, so I'd hate to see what it would do with Windows. (gross generalization). Of course, there are faster models out there with better CPUs, PXA255 (Xscale with double membus), PXA262 (PXA255 with NAND mem 32mb) and PXA270 which hits up to 600mhz so far...In any case, to reiterate, praises to the developers
