I sympathize with you and understand your perspective. I server as a Special Operations guy in Nam but was a closet geek. I still love mathematics, Symphony, Opera and Ballet. I like PBS but by and large you can otherwise shoot the TV. I love to read.
The majority of folks aren't the brightest bulbs in the package and here in the USA, people have gotten lazy and confused in their values because they have almost everything they need. Of course they want more but mostly want to be cool. My in-laws include two lawyers, two university profs. and a doctor. When together, the dominating conversations are: Basketball, Baseball, "Friends" TV and making more money.
In warfare there is a thin red line, in life there is a thin red line in the population that loves what they do and tries to make things better. Sorry for the rant.
