Jesus Christ, they could've not so blatantly ripped off Firefox with the toolbars and Safari RSS for the RSS feeds. It's like they don't even give a shit anymore.
The linked article refers to the TPM chipset and a Gartner speculative report. So in effect, Slasdot is trying to report a speculative Gartner report as fact.
When you've been using UNIX for 20 years, start a family, and actually find other hobbies than sitting in front of the ol' cancer machine, you'll get sick of stuff like:
- learn yet another new config format - having to constantly recompile a kernel or a kmod - compile anything
Just to get a camera hooked to your PC or try out some new piece of software.
It just gets really fucking old, eventually.
This is why I see OS X as a bigger threat to Linux than Windows. A lot of Windows users actually LIKE Windows; the way its laid out, the interface design, etc. They usually don't like OS X's interface.
Actually from all current indications, hints and hunches from folks inside Apple is that they will be standard PC's with standard motherboards and perhaps slight customizations. Although this is all hearsay because apparently, Apple STILL isn't exactly sure which way they'll go.
But you can betcher ass they'll do something to this effect. Who's to say it that hacked versions of 10.5 that run on white box PC's won't show up on the net within two weeks.
Uhm, if you're worried about buying an "obsolete" machine today because of what will come out two years from now, I suggest you never buy a computer again, because I guarantee you, whatever you buy will be "obsolete" in two years.
Are you retarded? Go read the link YOU provided. And then go Google, specifically kernelthread.com, where they discuss how that although they use the Mach 3.0 kernel, they've eliminated most of the performance hits by highly integrating the BSD subsystem.
Before you mark me as a troll, go read my previous comments where I stick up for Microsoft dozens of times.
1.) Classic example of FUD.
2.) Ballmer and Alchin are absolutely morons with little clue of what customers actually want and where technology is heading.
3.) Google succeeds in the market because they innovate and provide tools users really want to use.
4.) Microsoft (mainly) succeeds mainly because they're business-savvy and good at FUD. Not for their tools. Not for their "innovations".
5.) BTW, did anyone catch that MS guy discussing tabs in IE7 and subtely trying to intimate that they got the browser tab idea from their previous Office products and that they thought it'd be cool in web browsers, too?
Typical MS corporate bullshit, which hurts their engineering and hurts their engineering customers.
Unfortunately, this masks the significant capabilities and tools put out by some of their remarkable engineering teams.
I read all these posts about how they're "brilliant" and "harmless".
1.) You think they're brilliant for "hacking" the system? Have you seen how bad computer security is these days? Their hack probably involved reading a password off a sticky note on some teacher's machine.
2.) Harmless? In today's world, stealing someone's SSN is worse than stealing their TV, car, sandwich, and wife. A person's SSN is mind-boggingly valuable, these days.
Fuck 'em, punish them. They're not the victims and they need to take responsibility for their crimes. Yes, crimes. They committed a criminal act.
Gone are the harmless days of my youth re-enacting war games on my high school's VAX.
It makes me cringe and wonder why the fuck we're still using something as simple as a 9 digit number to control such huge portions of our lives.
At least not officially. It's curious how he went from joking that he was "autistic" and "had" asperger's to a self-diagnosis of "I probably have asperger's" to now, "i have asperger's".
Perhaps, Mr Cohen should actually go out and get diagnosed by someone competent before misrepresenting a legitimate illness.
PS: What's with people's fascination of collecting disorders? "I'm a cutter! No! Bipolar! No, schizophrenic!"
For the people that actually have these fad-ish disorders, it isn't some cool gee-whizz thing, it's a nightmare.
All I want from the Windows version of Firefox is for cut/copy-and-paste to work reliably. Every so often, the copy function refuses to work in Firefox and its so utterly annoying that I end up using crappy IE most of the time now.
This issue has been in since the Phoenix builds. And yes, I submitted a bug report long ago, which looking now, seems to have disappeared.
When I need to copy-paste, its for important stuff.
1.) The new color scheme for this topic with the weird light background on white is painful to read.
2.) The poster seems to trollingly intimate that Windows is slow, by the use of "chugging along".
Perhaps less zealous story contributors should be accepted. At least until Linux has some semblance of a faster graphics stack, and some semblance of a much faster network stack (currently, on average, it seems as though linux is only slightly faster than Windows 2003).
Jesus Christ, they could've not so blatantly ripped off Firefox with the toolbars and Safari RSS for the RSS feeds. It's like they don't even give a shit anymore.
Wow great, an office suite with a Windows GUI. Now I can harken back to the days before I "switched", back when Windows was relevant to me.
TextEdit it still is.
No, he meant "hacker". The only people who call hackers "crackers" are the Slashdot drones who listen to ESR's rewriting of history.
People who break into systems have always been a classification of "hacker" (there are also kernel hackers, hardware hackers, etc).

and so on...
It's ALWAYS been this way, sorry. Don't believe everything you read.

So much FUD, so little news.

I win.

It's unfortunate he chose not to implement the "500 Server Error" in his design. Shows lack of fore-sight.

dumb ass.
I own both a dual G5 and an AMD64 system, with both Windows 2003 and Linux running on it. Have fun arguing about which platform is best.
And since you're curious, I use my G5 most of the time.
Uhm, so? WTF does this have to do with our rights online?
Have these Microsoft security "gurus" been hiding out on Tattooine for the past 10 years?
Look at me, I go and see Star Wars, and I'm already a Trekkie!

I guess you missed the day covering "puppet governments" in high school?
How do you know he did? The evidence speaks against your argument.

That's funny. I can go here and download the VS2005 beta:
http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2005/
Might wanna actually check the fuckin' facts before you correct someone next time.
Like others, I was less than satisfied with this review. Well actually, I can't state that objectively, as I stopped when the reviewer used "LOL".
Yet another stupid moderation. Someone should probably point out to the parent the fact that the betas are free.
Oh wait, nevermind. I just did.

Uhm, all of them do, but al Qaeda to a lesser extent.
I take it you haven't audited any chinese or north korean infrastructure lately, instead opting for the "America is everything" approach.
If you want to play games -- China, arguably, has the most to lose, in terms of both military and industrial attacks.
Then you have something seriously wrong with your AMD64 box running Windows XP.
I'm an OS X bigot, but I'm sorry, an ibook g4 (i have a 1.4ghz) is anything but on par even with my Athlon 2.5ghz XP box.
My dual G5 box running Tiger is about on par with my 3.2 p4 box running XP.
Don't make shit up to push your favorite OS, that'll just piss the newcomers off if they follow your words and buy an ibook.
If all you want is speed, buy an XP machine. If you want usability and a sane UI, use OS X.
