There is no yearly payment to 'publishers' thru a tax that allows the library to continue to share books. Actually, there is. It doesn't go to the publishers, but it does go to the copyright holders. Its why I specified Canada as I'm not sure if Australia or America have a similar system.
Linux isn't used as much as it could be, because everyone knows Windows. If you train the next generation in Linux, businesses will have a greater incentive to switch, which means there'll be a greater incentive to develop software for Linux.
Comparing music-sharing networks to libraries, however, is inane sophistry. How? Libraries give people free access to books because its deemed this is beneficial to society. Same deal with filesharing.
Music isn't a public service, creating music is a public service. Musicians can still perform music live as much as they want and be compensated however they want.
What if you don't want to read Canadian books from a library? Well too bad! Your still getting taxed! So go change that before you start bitching about this.
As someone who has never downloaded a song off the internet, and who buys all of my CDs If its legal to fileshare, why the hell would you pay more? Do you also give the police money for no reason?
Well I was put into a private school and have no kids and plan to have no kids, so therefore I shouldn't have to pay as much taxes as part of it goes to funding public schools.
The point is neither will happen if its said by internets trolls. If all that happened was someone said "I'm gunna rape ya" then that would be equatable with the parent's anecdote and nothing would come from it.
By infringing on the copyright of big media, you hurt those who would provide you with what you want. There are many indie to small time producers out there putting shows online (I'll admit I don't know of many online-only movies), and by pirating instead of going to these people, you're hurting them. Either pay for the content or go to the indie producers, or go to something else who you'll inevitably help. But whileever you pirate, you're simply as bad as the MPAA.
Smarter men than you have debated the issue. If by debated you mean bribed, then yes, smarter people then me have bought and paid for copyright extensions.
Copyright was created so that people could have a limited period in which they would be able to make commercial gain from it. Now its perpetual, often long beyond the product's commercial life, so it certainly is reasonable for people to ask the copyright holders of abandonware to free up their source code.
You do realize most other civilized democracies manage to somehow not have their elections ridiculously rigged using simple pencil and paper don't you?
Riight, because you know, I wasn't linking to just one website as an example. Also I agree, it did look terrible until you watch an episode, then it gets quite good.
Have you made clear the monetary incentive to move to a better browser? After all, you do charge them more because you spend more man-hours complying with their ridiculous requests, right?
Dunno, but I don't put up with Apple's defective by design products, and instead watch shows that put more effort in their actual product. Although I will admit I do put up with DRM in DVDs, however my annoyance at the DVDs is mounting every time I suffer through their ads or warnings.

I'll arrest anyone who doesn't tell me who this Anonymous Coward is.

Guess what, as a Canadian you're paying a tax for libraries that goes to Canadian authors. You'd better start writing to your Congressman!

They made killing me so much easier then it was before.
Funnily enough I'm also disgusted by firearm and tobacco producers.

I think the problem isn't Americans, but people who know anything about maths.

To be honest, I'm actually too ignorant to understand miles.
What a coward. You should have done without and perhaps supported those that give you what you actually want.
