aiee. keep in mind that i haven't tried this and i have little experience with hosted dns :)

as an example that has been mentioned on /. , gandi offers secondary dns server :
    http://wiki.gandi.net/en/domains/dns#gandi-s-secondary-dns

you would still need a primary somewhere, but once you do, the gandi secondary one should automatically get all the changes you make to the primary one.

(i'm not affiliated with gandi or even a customer, only have seen them mentioned on /. as a decent provider)

  5. Re:You think this is a Game? on GoDaddy Goes Down, Anonymous Claims Responsibility · · Score: 1

multiple dns servers does not imply in any way that you are just using somebody's else's servers to store your zone info. even then it is possible to set up zone transfer, as master/slave is per zone. though on slashdot saying "multiple dns servers" most would still assume having control over those servers.

note that multiple servers are needed and used no matter whether you manage them yourself or not - even when you do that yourself, they are still multiple servers (maybe that caused the confusion ?)

Also start doing open source kind of work

this. why do we have a topic like this on slashdot every 3-6 months (well, at least the ones i notice) ?

it seems obvious to me that one is more likely if they are :
    a) interested in what they do
    b) can do it reasonably well
    c) can show both of a and b.

if you are into IT, in high school, university or whatever and have not looked at any opensource stuff before... most likely you are not interested in the field.

by the way, we are in north-eastern europe, and we are looking for people. the problem is that most who apply do not have anything to show*.
how can one claim to be into the field and never ever felt a need to report a bug ? i'm not talking about having long patch history for some project or even being a maintainer for another, i'm not talking about writing full documentation for some software (although all that would be nice) - we have people applying who haven't heard about bugzilla. for somebody who actually wants to work in the field, i'd expect them to name at least 3 bug trackers, at least 3 version control systems and have at least a passing knowledge of 2 from each category.

so how are we looking for people right now ? well, we have partially given up on headhunters and look into opensource communities (mostly ours, as we are working on opensource software :) )

    * there are some exceptions, people who have little previous experience with practical tools, but can pick them up extremely fast and are good at what they do. there are probably a few in a million, though, so think hard whether you can claim to be one of them ;)

  10. Re:Doesn't matter in the end on Comments On Code Comments? · · Score: 2

code usually will not tell you why something is done this or that way. at most it will tell you how it is done (and even then, not always).

also, even when you think you know what exactly code does, you usually do not see the "big picture". in any software that's more complex than a few operations there will be algorithms that can not be understood from a couple of functions. this is where comments can help enormously, as the overall logic can help to avoid silly mistakes.

the problem with "code does not match comments" is that... the project is done anyway. if that is the case, code quality is so horrible, nothing good can come out of it.

another somewhat interesting thing is that in way too many cases, when talking about slightly more obscure low level operations, nobody really knows how it should work - unless there's a comment somewhere, explaining what and why is done there. yeah, one can figure what the code does, and there might some ugly hack in there. so that is kinda cleaned up, only to discover two months later that the old logic was correct (as impossible it seemed two months ago...), just some asshole did not bother adding a comment about it.
