    From TFA: US patent that yields it the ownership of key online multi-player gaming facilities, including player league tables, voice communications and online gaming host services.

    Wow, they just patented telephones, VOIP, MMORPGs, etc... Sheesh, shouldn't something like this be a LITTLE obvious?

    Way to go, USPTO!

    Is there anyone who _isn't_ willing to make some sacrifices for the better of the world?

    Ok, ok, dumb question, I know, but.. sheesh, how short sighted can people be? Our race, all of humanity, depends on ALL OF US, keeping it together, making things better for everyone.

    I guess the real question is: What sacrifices are you willing to make for your descendants, or your neighbors descendants?

    More important, look at what the allied soliders in WWII sacrifice for it.

    Ouch. I complain that I only was able to go to a technical school [putting myself through college now]; at least I got to finish out high school.

    It amazes me everytime I read about how hard so many people have it, then I look around and see these hideously overweight people driving SUVs, tossing out food, with a ridiculous sense of entitlement (e.g. "society owes me because I'm special") to that effect.

    I wonder if more of us in America will ever wake up and realize how good we have it? Yes, of course, the wealth/technology/etc we have introduces its own set of problems, (e.g. SCO, Microsoft, obeisty, ...) but I'd rather deal with that anyday than lack of education or starvation.

    Wow, that's a really nice requirements chart. I wish more projects
    would use that. (Of course, with apt-get and dpkg, it's not such a
    concern, but.)

    Maybe even nicer if they would produce an .xml of it, and we could
    write a tool to test the system against it - e.g. "you meet the
    requirements," or "YOU FAIL IT, you need $PKG $VER."

    From the accountment page, KWin got a button for always on top, Juk can now burn audio CDs, and Kopete can transfer files. e.g. features that I've really been wishing for (amongst many more)...

    Guess I've got some downloading to do, eh? Which comes to a gripe - it's a real pain in the arse to download all the seperate files and install them. Sure would be nice if the KDE team wrote an "update" script that would check for updates and optionally download/install them. PS. Anyone want a gmail invite? mail me.. [only one left!]

    heh :) No, it was supposed to be a joke, anyway - I don't really give a damn who knows if I'm looking at porn, encryption codes, or other "subversive" information.

    It's only the people with strong agendas (read: religious*) who are embarassed/ashamed/etc of such things.

    (* Yes, most religions have an agenda - that is, converting more members to it, e.g. *YOU*, so that you can be saved by $DIETY and rest peacefully in $AFTERLIFE_LOCATION.)

    Uhm.

    What exactly are you smoking, and why aren't you sharing? :) I didn't say anything about six hours.

    In my experience, my powerbook does not get 6 hours of battery life; however, it does get around four. (Not always extensive use, sometimes just reading /.)

    Right, but with a system where you intentionally mention what you watch, you have more protection.

    What about idiot web sites that encode user name/passwords in the URL? Or other sensitive information, for that matter.

    The people running this report then have that information. Sure, the company doing the report might not use it or even look, but can you be sure about the minimum wage monkey they've hired to pore through the reports?

    That in my mind brings up the question of culpability.

    If someone intentionally hampers $DEVICE and makes it liable to cause others harm (by infection, waste of bandwidth, etc), shouldn't the person that commited those acts (or the owner of $DEVICE) be liable?

    For example, if someone removes the seat belt from thier car, (why, I don't know, and yes, this is a contrived example) and then a passenger gets in and is injured in an accident (and it can be proven passenger would not have been injured had a seat belt been installed), isn't the owner/modifier of the vehicle liable? (E.g. even if s/he wasn't at fault for the accident..)

    That does raise a good question - shouldn't people be somewhat responsible for maintaining thier computers? e.g. so those computers aren't used a spam zombies, etc, or worse.

    You maintain your car, don't you?

    If someone were to wreck into my car because they hadn't properly maintained thier car, wouldn't they be in a position of facing some sort of negiligence charge? If so, why doesn't the same thing apply to computers? (Granted, at the current date and time, it's rather difficult for the home user to keep thier Microsoft box secure, but we're getting there.)

    Wow, I'm really amazed people agreed to do this. The FA doesn't mention it, but I wonder if they were compensated in some manner.

    No way in hell I'd want someone to know how often I visit tubgirl..

    But seriously, in my mind this is akin to hardware "spyware" - I wonder if these same people would agree to having a key logger installed.. Maybe this is one of the reasons spyware is so prolific? Maybe some people just don't care what the corporate overloads know about them?

    (I never said they were smart.....)

    Hmm, that is an interesting point.

    I wonder how apple came to the decision to use this specific battery - e.g. if it was, as you say, soley a financial decision, or there were other, more complicated reasons for it.

    Personally, I'd be willing to shell out a couple hundred extra for.. high quality components, e.g. not the cheapest, but the best manufactured and tested.

    Can anybody reccomend a computer manufacturer that does this?

    Yes you are, just admit it! It's okay, there are professionals who can help you work through these self-esteem issues.

    On the other hand, unless a post is flagrantly offensive (and intended that way), I find it's more or less a waste of time pointing it out to the original poster, as a lot of people simply.. refuse to learn or modify thier world-view at all. :)

    In any product, but espescially those designed for power consumption and size constraints, you're going to have issues.

    Plainly, this stuff is just plain hard to do. Granted, Apple could probably test more sufficently, but I'd wager they test thier product designs much more thoroughly than certain other companies.

    Of course, too much time testing, and they're missed the market window, and someone else eats thier pie..

    I think a lot of this comes from them "pushing the edge" of run time and power.

    e.g. It'd be relatively easy for them to "get it right" by reducing power output requirements or the processing power, but they're trying to find a middle ground.

    Of course, they also aren't manufacturing the batteries themselves, or designing much beyond the physical qualities of the battery. (AFAIK)
