My only question is: If they can't seem to patch their OS fast enough, what makes them think they can keep their AV software up to date?"
If you let Symantec or Network Associates to maintain Windows, I don't believe they could do much better than Microsoft. But their anti-virus softwares are the most popular, and the updates are quite in time.
To patch an OS, a lot of testing must be done to ensure that the patch does not break something else.
China is a real threat to the potential for world democracy.
I never understood what does world democracy mean. Does it mean the world practising The Democracy defined by US? At least that seems to be what the US government wants.
Most of the spams I receive are from companies in US or other English-speaking countries. The reason why many spams come from China is that there are many free email service providers there that give SMTP/POP access to users (unlike MSN and Yahoo, which only provide web access), so it's extremely easy to get a free account and start sending bulk emails.

You will still be using the same set of programming skills, no matter how the programs are represented and stored.

If china ever has 20% of the world's wealth, you can bet it won't be in the hands of the people.
US, perhaps, has about 50% of the world's wealth, but most of that isn't in the hands of the people either.

Linus is actually the father of Windows! Too sad ...
