i honestly dont know if it will or wont do anything to help decline microsofts monopoly. but i DO know that properly implemented, any AJAX app should be sufficently fast for most users. in fact, if people switch to vista like microsoft expects/wants then they will need a sufficently fast computer to do so. these people will probably end up having some form of broadband, so in this scenario, the users pc & internet connection are fast enough for most purposes. all you need then is a backend that's sufficently fast (mabye making use of some client-side things like spellcheck or whatever - just so you dont have to ask the server if every word is correct as an example) then AJAX apps should be fast enoug for the user to not be able to tell if office or weboffice is faster.
tho, i'm waiting for some cool ajax apps to come out, because i think it'd be neat to have a few apps running as a server on my laptop, such as a web-interface to share files (as samba dosnt work 100% of the time, and nobody i know uses NFS 'cept me). there are possibly other things but that's about it. hmm... rails comes with a webserver... mabye i should go make one...
thats true, but i doubt that it's even REASONABLE for someone to program a whole D3D layer in linux... let alone how many people would use it. in linux it's just easier to program it that way, in windows they can just add it to the rest of the OS like apple, linux, or any other OS that has opengl support.
and besides, i dont know of any place you can get a copy of the D3D source to incorporate into linux, so that's not really even an option!
XP Home will take one physical CPU... one socket, but takes full use of hyperthreading.. a second virtual CPU, and will do the same with two cores in one socket.
NOT TRUE!!! a hyperthreading processor comes up as ONE processor in XP Home.
trust me, i have personally installed XP Home on multiple HT processors, and fixed many too. and on ALL of them, when you go into task manager to view the processors you find only one processor. while in Pro, you find 2 processors.
so while microsoft may say one socket = one cpu, they probably forgot to code that into windows. so your gonna have to buy yourself XP Pro to use hyperthreading on HT procs. and run 2 copies of XP Pro to take advantage of HT multicores (i dunno if the multicores are HT) since you will have essentially 4 processors.
your going to delete information on a drive your about to RMA because it's dead...
so you want a peice of hardware/software that will magically bring this DEAD drive back to life, and write to the whole platter 7+ times?
sir, if you can write to the WHOLE PLATTER enough to erase data on a DEAD DRIVE then your drive probably isnt dead.
and if it isnt dead, and just flaky... i've noticed that linux via ide and isb-ide devices allow you to read/write to flaky drives usually. and there is some software out there that can do that. alturnatively you can probably just write a script that will write 1's, then 0's to the whole drive multiple times and at the end will write random characters to the drive.
in fact, i think i'ma go learn how to do just that.
i'de get this board, not worry about the SLI features (unless your gonna use it) and not care about the hardware RAID... this way if you get really paranoid you can stick 4 more drives in and mirror the bitches! or alturnativly stick in more drives to make it go faster!
but thats just what i'de do. if it was just for me servin files to myself & friends. anything more i'de start to look into more $$$
why dont we just implant shock-collar like things into people that react to thoughts of evil-doing. that way whenever people think about hurting someone they'll get a nice big shock, kinda like cartman and his implanted v-chip.
and then we can just start breeding it out of our kida through gene therapy? and eventually why not instead of giving birth or even conceiving people we'll breed and grow them so they wont ever have any 'wrong' thoughts or concept of evil. we'll even make them all look the same and have the same skillset so no one will be different, which will deterr killing anyone because if you kill someone, or hate someone, your really just killing/hating yourself!
or why not just teach tolerance instead of forcing tolerance - which isnt very tolerant.
it's called a compressor/limiter - it's accually 2 seperate processes, one that squashes the high volumes (if ya have any) and the other that boosts low volumes.
you can find something like this in prettymuch any audio editing software. i cant think of any free programs that do this but on windoze you can use adobe audition or cool edit (96, 2000 whatever) - i used to use cool edit but they got bought by adobe and so i use that now. by far the best program for general audio editing.
although, you may not want to shell out $300 for that - so just search online for something and play with it. sorry i cant reccomend anything free or cheaper:\

redundancy... speed... noise... that coolness factor you get when you say 'yeah, i'm running quad 64 bit opterons with 4 gigs of ram each. yeah thats right, this bitch has 16 gigs of ram, what you got?' and umm... well thats about it.
if your needs dont require you to have dual true gigabit nics, dual or quad processors, a scsi raid array and a space heater/pink noise generator, then get yourself some decient computers with the basics. servers are usually built with better parts (i dont know for sure but i'm pretty sure that the same silicon wafers that make the 2.4 celerons also make the 3.2 p4's, the difference is in the testing - i think, plz correct if i'm wrong) but for the most part they're standard parts.
$120 gets you MS Virtual PC 2004 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx...i think he's trying to run windows on linux... not linux on windows
ohh.... for mod points! +5 funny plz!!

i second this! one simple pill that makes you love anybody, everybody, and ultimately everything (especially fuzzy things, just cuz they're so fuzzy)
