There are a lot of naive comments on this news story. Microsoft's goal is to keep, exploit, and extend its monopoly, by whatever means (and exploiting its existing monopoly to extend monopoly power to additional areas is inherently illegal, so Microsoft is a criminal organization). This open-source release is a tactical move. It tells nothing about Microsoft's real goals.
It was probably justified within Microsoft on grounds like the following: (1) it will distract some of the Open Source community, possibly even con them into working for Microsoft unpaid, (2) it will generate some good publicity.
Last time I saw the EULA for a recent Windows version I saw in infamous "you may not connect with 3rd-party tools" clause in the license. Is that still there? Is using FreeNX (or VNC or anything else) to connect to a windows box remotely still a violation of the license?
If this is indeed in the Windows license, it's clearly illegal for a monopolist to impose such a condition, so don't worry about it. But is it really in the license, or is the parent just trolling?
As usual, the primary workaround is to disable Active Scripting for any sites that aren't Trusted, but you should have turned off that and Javascript years ago for safety anyway.
What a load of rubbish. You're right about Active Scripting, but there's nothing wrong with Javascript, and sensible use of Javascript makes the whole web more responsive.
For example, when you fill in a form, local Javascript should validate the entries whenever possible. This gives much quicker feedback to the user because it avoids a round-trip to the server (and it reduces the load on the server as well). We need more sites doing this, not fewer.
(Of course, all validation has to be repeated on the server, but "pre"-validation is still a huge time-saver, bandwidth-saver, and server-load-saver).
No, you don't. Nobody does. The best theory of gravity we have is Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which most physicists who understand it believe to be incorrect.
But you're right about conversion of gravity waves to sound waves being useless as an aid to comprehension.
the Justice For Kashmir party...who's core policies...are based around separating Kashmir from India and giving it to Pakistan
Actually the Justice for Kashmir party stands for self-determination for the people of Kashmir. That means, a UN-monitored referendum in Kashmir, where the people vote to decide which country they want Kashmir to be part of.
I have no first-hand knowledge about the rest of your assertions, but one blatant falsehood has set your credibility to zero.
It says in the article that they can't sell more than 10% of it in any single day.
No. It says they can't sell more than 10% of the average number of shares per day traded in the preceding 5 business days. So, for example, if 290,000 shares of SCOX were traded per day, for each of the last 5 days, the maximum number of SCOX shares that Baystar may sell today would be 29,000. No matter how many shares Baystar holds.
I too have my money in RBC (about 5k). I didnt really care. They have a better account than the rest around here (free checking yada yada yada
Most banks offer free checking if your account is $5k. Of course you are right to stick with a bank that gives you personally a better deal than competing banks - even if you thereby support a scumbag. But please, at least check out the competition to be sure that you really are getting a better deal from the scumbag. And if not, please consider moving your account.
i run back to enjoy my commodity hardware...i guess i have to thank windows for that
Absolutely not.
The concept of the personal computer was popularized by Apple with the "Apple ][" and Dan Bricklin's spreadsheet, Visicalc. For the open architecture PC, we have to thank IBM and the companies who figured out how to write a legal BIOS: Compaq and Phoenix. IBM later tried to close the architecture by introducing a patented I/O bus, and we have to thank a group of PC makers, led by Compaq, who had the collective balls to stand up to IBM in the marketplace. That's what, and who, gave us the commodity open-architecture PC.
All this happened before Windows had any significance. Windows had little market share before version 3.0 came out.

Seems to me that's a problem with PHP, not a problem with MySQL.

Seems a reasonable comment to me. should never have been modded down.
