I thought we were sharing- we let you run on our networks, don't we? Just because one kid shares a ball with the other kid doesn't mean that the other kid owns the ball. What you're talking about is OWNERSHIP, not sharing.

Yes, let's cheer for Apple, because they give us DRM'd AAC music for iPod's only...

What makes Apple any better than MS? They do the same practices, arguably worse than Microsoft would do. Granted they have success with the iPod, but if it were not for the scroll wheel (or if the scroll wheel wasn't just an iPod thing) then it wouldn't be any better than most of the other players on the market.

Microsoft getting into the buisiness will open up more stores for more players, possibly giving more options. I agree that WMA sucks, but if MS floods the marketplace there could be more competition for my $.99

You are absolutely right about the multimedia- I am about as newbie for linux as they come. I have an extensive microsoft background and know a lot about the ins and outs of their systems. When it came to linux, I found that ubuntu fit me the best and had better support than linspire or mandrake (this is from my own experience). But getting media to play on that was way too complicated. It could be done, but for some reason only Xine seems to work- every mplayer window crashes. If it came with the codecs built in(and I know there are free ones with it) and a better media player(such as Xine), I'd be recommending it to more people as an alternative.

My sony vaio box has been very simple to get into, and it has space for three hard drives. And it's a consumer PC! The box may not be as accessible as yours, but it's still pretty easy: pop off the top (by pressing in two tabs at the back of the top) and push up the side. All the cards are there, laid out, drives are easy to get to, and it's easy to put back together.

Cheap plastic? I had an ipod mini that broke (headphone jack that requires soldering) and because it's out of warranty takes more $ than it costs to fix(by apple)!

My point is, neither is perfect. Apple has a lot of innovations, but I'm not sold on it being better if they are just now moving over to hardware that my PC runs on. And although your mac may not have spyware/adware (my machine doesn't either, but we all know ms boxes usually do), I like being able to run games and applications that the mac doesn't have. If you know how to set up a windows box, it's easy. If you don't, you don't.

Oh, and the hp compaq's are crap- I have one that is close to impossible to work with, and has too many restrictions (my friend can't do windows updates or get the latest directx because of it). But just cause your friend has a bad box doesn't mean he should give up on PC's. Just because I got a bad iPod doesn't mean that I've given up on apple.

Here's an example of what I've been through:
A high school biology teacher had an assignment due about how the earth was created. This did not say anything about evolution, big bang, etc. Prior to the assignment, however, all topics of research and lecture were about evolution. A friend of mine wrote about how God created the world, animals, mankind, etc. He received an 'F' on the assignment, and was told to do it over again. After many parent/teacher/pricipal conferences, the teacher still refused to regrade his paper based on the assignment. She wanted him to write about how evolution is the reason we are here. Not until the parents threatened legal action did she change the grade.

In this case, taxpayer dollars were paid to denigrate my friend's religion, and he took action.

When I took the class the next year, I wrote about the same things that he did. A well thought out paper within the guidelines of the assignment. I recieved a 'C', which I could not argue. So because I chose not to write about what the teacher wanted, I got a lesser grade. Should I have just given in to the teacher to get a good grade? Or should I have written my own personal beliefs in order to get an 'A'?

That is why if we are going to remove religion from school, we remove other conflicting beliefs. If we are not going to remove all conflicting beliefs, then all religions should be respected regardless of assignment.

I've been in the bay area with cingular since 1998 (when they were pacbell pcs), and have had very few problems.

The phones: Cingular doesn't limit their phones to what they want it to do. I currently have a sonyericsson s710a that has bluetooth, infrared, memory stick, and a usb cable. I can transfer data between my computer and my phone, as well as to other phones (such as cingular's motorola line). The only limit that I have seen is in sharing games and applications. They have to be in the 'others' directory on the phone in order to share, but they can't be opened from there.

The service: I do know of a few drop spots, but they are few and far in between. And since cingular and at&t have come together, many of those drop points are gone. The area I am in mostly is the east bay area (san ramon, danville, walnut creek, pleasanton) and not the city. When i do go to the city, i have not noticed much change.

The customer service: The plan I am on includes 5 phones and is about $225 a month. So when going in for phone service, billing questions, etc. they will do pretty much whatever they can. Here's my most recent example: My sister's phone (z500a) screen went dark and when opened, she couldn't see anything on the screen. They promptly mailed a replacement, which had a broken speaker. So we took the phone into the store (the one in san ramon next to target) and they replaced it with a brand new phone- without us having insurance on the phone, and the phone being 2 months old. While in store, they had bluetooth earpieces on sale with a mail-in-rebate. After a little asking, the woman behind the counter sold me 2 earpieces with the discount, and without having to mail in the rebates.

So if you're going to switch because of the phones, they are a good option (especially if you are going with sonyericsson). e-mail me if you have any q's at spxero@gmail.com
