  2. Re:Nofollow that fellow on On the Matter of Slashdot Story Selection · · Score: 1

I may have changed my mind on this issue in the midst of writing my response. My first inclination was that there is no issue with a single user owning a large majority of the articles. The beauty behind /. is the fact that the influence by the editor on content in a given day is limited. But at the same time, spamming /. does just that. It requires the editor to pick through more content, thus removing some of the effectiveness of the free forum aspect.
The ideal, I suppose would be to limit a given user to a certain number of posts per day which would force each submission to be well picked and thought out. This raises the question of how you would limit each individual to a single user name. It would be unfair to one user per URL because someone could create an account with my home page and thus steal it from me.
What I would suggest for now would be to set a max number of submissions per username per day and see how long that lasts as a preventative to the article spamming that occurs.

I was really skeptical about signing up to that list. I figured that it was going to end up being like the "Remove" buttons in spam that verify an email address. Has it worked at all so far?

If the telemarketers get their way that Do Not Call list is going to be a fantastic source of active phone numbers.

  6. Re:Well I must say... on Can a Bayesian Spam Filter Play Chess? · · Score: 1

Well actually Bayesian filters aught to be able to discard inserted "noise". I'm not sure how the package the article pointed out works, but usually the attempt at pattern recognition accounts for either noise or randomization and finds appropriate matches despite small changes. So a bad move on the human's part should be ignored by the filter. I'm not sure it would be able to take advantage of the situation though.

The question I have is how well Deep Blue would do at spam filtration if it weren't obsessing over the kings and rooks all the time...

  7. pretty heated on U.N. To Govern Internet? · · Score: 1

Wow, this has gotten pretty heated.

The important point is that the internet isn't (or at least shouldn't be) monitored or governed by anyone, including the US gov't. Sure, private companies hold a lot of power on the internet, and they all fall under the jurisdiction of their home country, which is predominantly the US. But why should swiss companies be subject to US laws, or UN laws for that matter when they publish online?

You've got the point right here... I wonder how much money microsoft puts into www.vnunet.com .
Right now every time microsoft adds a "security" feature they get free press and the general public get the idea that microsoft is being proactive. Every time debian comes out with a security fix it's run of the mill. Whether they are bought or not, the news is working for microsoft.

You know that form fitting foam mattress material you see on infomercial? If you used that material as a record and if you're sensors were pointed at an angle (I assume they are already) impressions or dents from pressing down into the foam could disrupt the led light beams. The holes would flatten back into shape after a bit so you'd have to keep making them. You'd have to make the samples play when there is no talk back from the sensors which might be a bit harder, and you'd either have to pump up the juice on the LEDs or else make the mattress material shiny, but it probably wouldn't be all that different.

  10. buy an f***ing laptop on Will Mac mini Lead the Charge to Smaller Desktops? · · Score: 1

I am completely out of the loop on this topic. Why would anyone spend more money on a smaller computer? If you want something that you can carry around then buy a laptop. Otherwise you are spending time and money shrinking down something that sits on your floor next to your desk. How much time do you spend lugging that thing around. What if you want to throw in a second hard drive? What if you want a capture card. I worried that in five years there won't be a home for us geeks who actually want to use a system for more than downloading mp3 and movies on line.

Does anyone know what kind of a download size the Windows Update is going to be? I'm wondering if it's going to be worth throwing this on cd or if we should just use the windows Updater.

BTW, does anyone know how a few registry changes could possibly take up 250 megs?
