This reminds me of the Gwinnette County traffic camera deal in Georgia where a private company took over a public service and it goes to heck. Granted the camera deal included a kickback from every ticket, so the company exploited the system to issue more tickets, but still... ideas like this should be brought before the public before implementation so that these problems have a chance to be thought through. Let me step down from the soapbox...
So everybody should toss out those AS400 and BeOS boxes? There is no one answer for all the computing problems out there. Granted, I have not torn apart SkyOS, but the question itsself is a simple one. Why purchase something that is free, and may cause you to change the way you work? Because it is worth it. If a company can speed up repeatable task X by a factor of Y, eventually the cost of the conversion and the OS will pay for itsself.
That aside, I am not going to be paying for an OS any time soon. I like to roam with the penguins...
People buy windows when there is a free alternative. The reason is simple. SkyOS does something very well, and people who need that one thing done well will buy it. Don't ask me what it is that it does well...
where I work, we get free soda, coffee, etc. It probably only costs them a few pennies per employee, but it sure does make a difference. Plus, an addiction to caffine will make sure they stick around (the first one is always free...)
working for a healthcare software company, being an OSS activist, and having family who is working on that very initiative, you would think that I would have an opinion....but I don't.
For once in my life, spam was useful. There was a book being advertised called the Universal Command Guide that has helped me when I knew how to do something in one OS, but not another (in my case, Linux to AIX). It does not have everything, however it will help you in a jam when you forget how to create a new logical volume or something similar.
