    I'm rather impartial about the war.
    It was a good thing to get rid of Saddam although the US Government sucks when it comes to doing anything properly.

    I'm strongly opposed against guns in the hands of civilians however.
    Ignore hunting for the moment - its a different case.

    People have guns (legal) to shoot other people (illegal). Rather contradictory.
    You cannot conceal them, you cannot shoot them in suburbia and you can only use them for self defense which most people will never have to do.

    On the flip side, easily accessible guns means that criminals can get them easily.
    Yes I know that some of them would get guns illegally anyway, but being able to walk in to a mall and buy a gun is just stupid.

    Unless your a hunter, a gun is used for shooting people.
    Which makes them completely useless in a civilized society.

    I wouldnt call this a apples to oranges comparison.
    They are all common operating systems and they all fulfill the same purpose.

    Although they'd probably have to do a handful of Linux boxes to ensure that problems aren't distro specific.

    Most people who are bright enough to see how much money is being wasted, aren't US Citizens so they don't mind at all.

    Although I have thought about why the war is so expensive in the first place.
    How many million a day is it? I cant figure out where the money is going.

    Thats weird.
    If I was their sys admin I'd demand permission to use 3.0.0.x for the server farm.
    Man that would be easy to remember and would look cool in pings. :)

    Everything I have seen indicates that MySQL with a standard web based workload is faster than PostgreSQL.
    That plus the fact that I know MySQL means that there is little reason to switch.

    I wouldnt mind switching at all. I'm not a MySQL fan boy.
    However at the moment MySQL does the job well and nothing can consistently beat it in speed.

    Um you do realize that Google's main source of income is ads?
    They stand to lose a *lot* of money if the db has problems.

    That would be a good thing, not a bad thing because it means that its serving out requests pretty fast. :)

    The DB server is connected by a private lan and persistent connections are on.
    Over 2TB of traffic goes over that connection every month.

    A couple of years I met a guy who knew me.
    It took a couple of days but he eventually realized that he had heard of me from the net.
    I didnt know who he was.

    That was a very weird moment. :)
    We didnt consider it normal at all.

    Would you like to back up your claim?

    Your the first person in this thread to say that Postgre is faster than MySQL in raw speed.
    Everything I have read confirms that MySQL is faster but has less features and is less 'correct'.

    No I dont work for the Government.

    MySQL is very stable.
    Guess what Google uses for some things?
    Guess what many big websites use?

    Last time I checked, SQLite didnt handle 100gig databases very well. :)
    And I am using MyISAM.

    Stability isnt critical for my applications.
    Raw speed is however. A decrease in speed would be rather bad.

    I'm talking about 600 queries per second averaged over the day.
    I've never bothered figuring out what the peak is. I'm scared what it could be. :)

    All I really use is basic SELECT, INSERT and UPDATE.
    Nothing fancy. Just straight basic SQL.

    MySQL fits these requirements perfectly.
    PostgreSQL not so much.

    People like myself who design software requiring a database usually prefer speed over features.
    Thats why MySQL is usually chosen.

    The NSA is a different beast altogether.
    I'm not in America either so its not a concern for me. :)

    The difference between the NSA and Google is that NSA is looking for specific information about people.
    Google on the other hand will be looking for trends and overall statistics.
    They don't care about me as a individual at all.

    Monitors is one thing there isn't really a fancy UI for yet.
    I'm a Gentoo user so I'm probably more tolerant than most (and lazy :).
    I just have two xorg.conf's and swap between them for dual and single monitors. Fairly simple.

    You will find however that Vista has absolutely shocking hardware support however.
    Until you install the drivers from your motherboard's cd, Windows doesnt know half your hardware exists.
    Compared to Linux where virtually every driver is already on the install disk.

    The thing is that once your hardware is configured, you never have to touch it again.
    So Linux wins in that department.
