Yeah, Edge is often interesting, but more often it's writers are too busy frothing over press release hyperbole, spinning PR bull and mega-mega-ultra-alpha release mocked-up screen shots into "The Next Big Thing"(tm)
More often than not, these games end up being run-of-the-mill shooters, RPGs or racers.
And, if it's not embryoware that's the subject of desire, the magazine is busy rushing in the next generation of hardware before batch X of the current gen has had time to cool from the fab plant.
Let's slow down and savour the wonders of what can be achieved in the here and now.
"So, the creator of Lara Croft left after the first game? The first, largely unsuccessful game?"
You must be legally blind WRT your insight on this.
TR1 was a massively successful game that truly made Eidos.
Think for a moment. Why would a publisher commission a sequel to a "largely unsuccessful game?" TR1 was so unsuccessful that it catapulted Lara into the popular media - TV, mainstream mags, newspapers. U2 even commissioned "her" for their Zooropa tour.
I read about this the day before - gamezindustry.biz are just a bunch of magpies and press release re-writers. Sorry - i take that back - its just one magpie/rewriter.
LOL
I suspect that eurogamer might be under pressure to "big up" its hands-on review. I've heard from a couple journos at some respected magazines that prior to even getting a look at the game they have to agree to write Good Things(tm) about it. They've even written so much on this forum.
Were Reflection really part of "Pig noses"? I though that it and DMA were both simple developers that had titles published by the mighty Owl/Pig.
Reflection were of course formerly responsible for the graphically rich but gameplay-vapid "Shadow of the Beast"
As for Team17, I have it on very good authority that they are working on some very nive new stuff!
