    give or take about couple of thousand years or more.

    71 years ain't enough for many animals to adapt. As you states, that 0.5% can be resilient. So can nature.

  3. Let the nature take its course on Toxic Toads Taking Over Australia · · Score: 2, Insightful

    There seems to be plenty of natural predators of these toads.

    http://www.amonline.net.au/factsheets/canetoad.htm
    "Predators of Cane Toad tadpoles in Australia include dragonfly nymphs, water beetles, Saw-shelled Turtles and Keelback Snakes. Keelbacks also eat young toads; laboratory tests have shown that they can tolerate low levels of toad toxins. Young or adult Cane Toads are eaten by wolf spiders, freshwater crayfish, Estuarine Crocodile, crows, White-faced Heron, kites, Bush Stone-curlew, Tawny Frogmouth, Water Rat and the Giant White-tailed Rat. Some predators eat only the toad's tongue, or attack its belly and eat only the mildly poisonous internal organs."

    Also from this;
    "Only about 0.5% of Cane Toad individuals that hatch from eggs survive to reach sexual maturity and reproduce."

    It's best to let the nature deal with the 0.5% and give some time for the natural predators to neutralize the toads. It's under reported that these toads are consider NEUTRAL and not harmful pests as they are portrayed (typical over-reaction by media) because mainly they eat as much "pests" as they harm non-pests (whatever that means). The effects are over-shadowed by the human-factor ("the toad killed my dog/cat!" factor).

    Lastly it contributes scientifically valuable data on evolutionary effect. It may be more valuable and important to let the nature take its course rather than outback Ausies make some holiday "wacking" these toads as some sort of past time out of this as far as the ecology of Australia is concerned.

    I'm no biologist, but hell, I can see that nature is more resilient than we give it credit for.

    Because Marijuana is a different drug than alchohol, with much milder effects?
    What planet are you from and what biological composition is your body made out of? For a casual marijuana smoker, that may be true, but the effect is definitely not "milder" by volume.

    Yes, the drug war has resulted in many violations of people's rights.
    So has Prohibition of 1920. So has World War 2. It still does not count for many other things that violates the rights, such as abuse of power. After all, this is where you are going, the abuse of power.

    it shows that legalization, regulation. and taxation works.
    No, it doesn't. Moderation works. Without moderation, there is no evidence that shows regulation of alcohol could have worked. For instance, Islamic countries around the world shows that alcohol CAN BE EFFECTIVELY ILLEGALIZED.

    Columbus came over in 1492. Marijuana was banned in 1937. That's 445 years. I'll give it over 40 years to spread.
    Your math is a bit fuzzy and deceptive. 1) 445 years of colonization? I don't think so. 2) wide spread usage of marijuana in US wasn't even until 19th century. 3) herbal use in religious settings wasn't even practiced that commonly, I doubt it's being used that commonly today regardless of the legality.

    However it seems, the word "Drug Screening" makes a lot of people jumping to conclusion that their "freedom" will be taken away. The word "Paranoid" comes to mind.

    One thing I do realize is that few people love to make comparison between alcohol and drug. Points may be valid, but lacks common sense. Many narcotics are highly potent and lethal in small amount. Trying to have a rational discussion without that crossing your mind is nothing but fruitless.

    We can't even control drunk driving, what makes you think that "public" is going to be responsible enough to use marijuana without screaming civil right violation? Alcohol itself is a drug and stupid, making that as some kind of holy grail example to legalize narcotics is nothing but sad and idiotic. And I'm sure many cancer patients and HIV infected people are going to cry foul and I do sympathize by supporting State Law to legalize it as prescription medicine, but as recreational drug? Unless you are a Native Indian, please don't even use the word "We" as in "We have been using it as recreational purpose for centries."

    Although I do think, Ajax with javascript/dhtml is pretty cool, it's a bit overkill to think that it will be the "desktop" platform of the future. My beef would be an idea of a secondary application layer (only logical, not literal) over OS and within browser application framework. The shared load between Javascript JIT compilation and native applications to make Ajax application smooth, stable and functional would be hard to implement especially for portable PDAs with underpower processors and limited memory and buffer cache. Not to mention Ajax applications will always have to be confined within browser application, not able to compete with multithreaded and compiled bytecode applications.

    Try benchmark Javascript against your machine here;

    I think, for web "desktop" to be successful and attractive for "users," the web browser platform itself has to change dramatically to give Ajax applications an development edge and ability to compete with native applications. Otherwise similar fate of Java Applets may be ahead for Ajax.
