" Alot of high schools are beginning to switch over to linux and open-source applications to save money."
Good point. Also, why isn't school online? There should be tutors and supervisors online that help you. The sale of those massive school facilities would do a lot to finance other things.
High school reall needs to go the way of college, ie the scheduling system. Kids don't need to be there for "study hall" and any other filler class.
The range of abilities among students has gotten so diverse, most high school classes have literally become day care settings. Half of the class is asleep on their desk, while the other students are IMing eachother from their cell phones.
I TAed CS to college undergrads and once I was trying to teach C code for finding factorial to the class (most of them had already completed 75% credits).
There was a pindrop silence and finally one tard managed to ask "what is a factorial?"
This stuff is taught to Indian children in their 6th grade. And they are learning binary number system in 6th grade. And they are going to normal Govt maintained public schools.
HS education in US is a JOKE!
HS is 4 years. However, the educational value is much less than that. I think the average US HS curriculum can be mastered in one year by a bright teenager.
The bottom line is that after sixth grade, there should be three options:
1. Smart kids do a college prep track
2. Dumb kids do a vocational track
3. Troublemakers go to reform school
"SO whats stopping him from volunteering and starting to scan/digitize other works?"
Having been involved with non-profits myself, this is one of my biggest frustrations. Lots of people complain about things that YOU should be doing instead (e.g., "Why are you working in animal rescue when there are lots of homeless people?").
However, it never seems to occur to the complainers that they should get off their lazy butts and DO THE WORK THEMSELVES.
And if you were planning to track prisoners and homeless why would you use the RFID standard?
Thier are better ways of doing it(read up of USSR spying and tracking methods) then using RFID.
Because of the price. When you compare the price of RFID tags to the surveillance they accomplish, they are a landmark development for those companies, govwenments, and individuals who wish to track others.
Bar codes don't track the movements of the product for months after you bought it, so there's no comparison.
You totally miss the point of RFID though, which is that it's a landmark advance in surveillance technology. It can be easily abused.
The government would be very tempted to implant such tags in prisoners and homeless people. (Perhaps the argument could be made that it would reduce crime.) Employers may require implantation of such devices as a condition of employment. (The argument could be made that they would reduce employee shirking.)
"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."
Does that sound like he's saying he invented the Internet? It doesn't to me either.

I've heard that in Germany the government offers subsidies for Smart owners because of their environmental friendliness. I wonder if the Bush administration would be willing to consider something along the same lines...

Whatever happened to "if you're not going to do it right don't do it at all"?
You're missing the point of the exercise, which is to encourage people to turn off their self-criticism for a while and actually produce something. Often in life, one of the biggest causes of procrastination is excess perfectionism. Especially when it comes to works of creativity, it's often good to drop one's perfectionism.
I watch the Daily Show everyday, and I have always been impressed with Jon's civility.
He's had on some pretty creepy characters, in my view -- Karen Hughes, Richard Perle, Wolf Blitzer, Ralph Reed, Racicot, etc -- and he has never failed to treat them with respect and conduct a civil discussion. There have been a few times when he did, politely but plainly, point out that someone was a bit "out there" ( a guy STILL claiming close ties between OBL and Saddam comes to mind) -- but again, never in anger, never to humiliate anyone, never contentiously -- just honestly.
Same courtesies he extends to people closer to his own views.
I have to disagree with the parent poster of this thread though -- if Pres Bush were on the show, Stewart would be respectful, just as he had been for Kerry. He is NOT a partisan hack, blind to one side, and not to another. Many times we have seen him point out crazy things my folk (liberals) have done. But never has there ever been any kind of vicious ambush, or shouting down. Instead, it's like a Mad Tea Party that everyone has an equal seat at.
He's the Court Jester of our time -- the guy who can get away with speaking the truth. He doesn't suck up to anyone -- he survives because he is enormously entertaining and charming and does indeed dare to say the things that need to be said, and heard.
I heard Jon interviewed by Charlie Rose -- fascinating intellect. Says his approach is bred in the bone -- when your ancestors have long had Cossacks chasing you across the Steppes to kill you, you find it is useful protection to be cute and charming and make them laugh..... And so it has been with all the *great* clowns.
Jon did not appear on CrossFire to be the amusing monkey - (what a stupid trap *that* schtick is to get caught in) -- he was there as a serious American citizen. He raised excellent issues. But the CrossFire folk just do not receive signals from the frequency of intellect and facts.... I sure as hell appreciate him putting his neck out -- to some degree stepping out of the "court Jester" role to speak simply as a citizen -- he's doing so because the stakes are so high -- not out of any partisanship.
Ah well -- he tried -- but he seems to have to make do with Charlie Rose and Bill Moyers for now, the few remaining denizens of Planet Reality.
Yes, Stewart only runs a comedy show, but if he is so serious about the media asking the candidates real questions, why did he make his Kerry interview so lame and softballish? He had the opportunity to really ask, not the set-up-and-trap-em type questions, but to make him say clearly all the things they want to avoid.
You pretty much answered your own question: HE RUNS A COMEDY SHOW. It's sad when news corporations have to look to Comedy Central for cues on integrity.
Jon Stewart and The Onion are Better Spin and commentary than the regular conservative/liberal pundits and editorialists. The internet bloggers and prolific posters here on forums like Slashdot Politics are as good, and often much better, than the "partisan hacks" that Stewart talked about. That's why I'm here, reading and posting, and not watching TV.
The AP wire, when they stick to simple facts, is our primary source of news. They tell us which politician said what, which corporation did this, or which organization said that. They are obviously very selective with the facts, and insert a certain amount of spin, but they are the closest to raw data we have.
The comedians, satirists, bloggers - and trolls - provide better commentary, spin, emphasis, and analysis than CBS and Westinghouse, NBC, Microsoft and General Electric, ABC and Viacom Disney, and obviously Fox and Newscorp.
It's a sign of the times - Comedy Central is more honest and makes more sense than the "real news". I wonder if the people living under Soviet Empire felt the same way about Pravda and the Official News?

http://www.alternet.org/election04/2004/10/002578. html
The carbon dioxide that the vegetation sank into its cells will be liberated by the death of those biomes. And since a lot of this vegetation is burned for fuel, that release will be quicker than it would in the absence of human activity.
The tundra is releasing huge amounts of methane and carbon dioxide now, from microbial processes. Plus, as the oceans warm up, increasing amounts of methane gas are released as the molecular methane bound in methane clathrate ices is freed by melting. Just to give an idea of how this is changing the atmosphere now, Summer temperatures at the North Pole were 15F warmer than normal -- just a few weeks ago.
Right now, these newly-active natural sources of GHGs (Greenhouse Gasses) may exceed the amount of industrial GHGs being produced. The process is certainly self-reinforcing, and the feedback loop is now fully established.
It's no longer a matter of turning off lights and buying hybrid cars. Global Warming will not stop until the natural mechanisms now producing it stop. We should manage the energy sources we have as best we can, but there's nothing we can do about climate any time soon.
Since the time that the Earth formed a crust, the planet has been bi-stable in terms of climate: either hot or cold, stadial or glacial. The balance has been seriously threatened about half a dozen times, AFAIK: During the early Proterozoic "Iceball Earth" episode 2.3 BYA; during the pre-Cambrian Vendian period, 900-600 MYA, 4 glacial epochs; and during the Permian extinction (251 MYA). Why the climate recovered, I don't know, but it did. But this time, if we keep pushing the atmosphere with increasing amounts of waste heat and heat-trapping GHGs, we could push it beyond its ability to recover at all. No one knows what that point is, but within a few centuries of it starting, the surface of the Earth would be too hot to support life.
We started the ball rolling, but now it's gotten beyond our control. If we survive this era, I hope our decendants learn not to do what we have done.
...is so important. There are LEGITIMATE REASONS to not want to have a tracking device in your car, not just tinfoil hat paranoia. Sure there may be "privacy protections" but keep in mind that a company's privacy is only as strong as the minimum wage employee who's bribed $100 to let a stalker have some info.
At the risk of being modded down (since anything more than mildly critical of Bush gets negative points), this is not beyond the scope of the current White House occupants to put Democrats through this kind of "mistake."
Immediately after 9-11, Prime Minister Cheney ordered Continuity of Government to go into effect. Remember that? The program calls for the evacuation of government leaders from Washington and the activation of the underground hideaways that shelter bureaucrats trained to keep Uncle Sam in business. The problem was no Democrats were evacuated or kept in the loop. Must have been an oversight.:)
I wonder what operating systems the users of this will be usuing. Maybe a larger-than-average percentage of people who use Gmail are on Linux instead of Windows. What then?
The parent post should not have been modded insightful, because it reveals the fact that the poster DID NOT READ the fucking article(s). It was NOT a publicity stunt by one of them "Demorats" trying to push the "librul agenda" onto the American people.
Here's a passage from the SF Gate article that should shed some light for the poster:
Federal air security officials said the initial error that led to scrutiny of the Massachusetts Democrat should not have happened even though they recognize that the no-fly list is imperfect. But privately they acknowledged being embarrassed that it took the senator and his staff more than three weeks to get his name removed.
A senior administration official, who spoke on condition he not be identified, said Kennedy was stopped because the name "T. Kennedy" has been used as an alias by someone on the list of terrorist suspects.
And how many people wrongly on the list can call Tom Ridge? If it took Senator Kennedy several weeks, how long would it take me or you?
Thank you to the government for keeping us "safe" by taking away our Civil Liberties. Bastards.
Oh yeah, I'm sure it was a bug. "Kennedy" sounds kind of Middle Eastern, don't you think? Wonder how many other Democrats will run into this kind of "mistake."
The current White House occupants are shameless. Immediately after 9-11, Prime Minister Cheney ordered Continuity of Government to go into effect. The program calls for the evacuation of government leaders from Washington and the activation of the underground hideaways that shelter bureaucrats trained to keep Uncle Sam in business. The problem was no Democrats were evacuated or kept in the loop. Must have been an oversight.
