  1. Microsoft paradigm shift? on Shared Source Device Emulator from Microsoft · · Score: 1

With this announcement and the recent release of VirtualPC for free download...
Are we seeing some kind of paradigm shift from Microsoft here? Or is it merely an attempt to increase recently waning market share?

Either way, this seems like it can only be good for consumers.

/me eagerly awaits free download of Windows Vista... ;-)

  4. When will people learn??? on Encrypted Ammunition? · · Score: 1

Gun control does not work. The concept is fundamentally flawed. Outlawing guns does not make civilians fundamentally safer... It simply means that no law abiding citizen will own a firearm. When only criminals have guns, crime rates go up. Why? Criminals make choices and decisions just like other people (most of the time). If they are afraid doing X may cause them to get shot, the chances of them deciding to do X decrease.

We should learn from Canada's past mistakes and stop trying to control guns. Those who wish to hurt others will always find a mean to do so, so please stop trying to remove an important line of defense from the hands of law-abiding citizens.

  5. Affirmative Action - In General on GNOME Reaches Out to Women · · Score: 1

I completely agree with the parent post. All affirmative action programs should be abolished. People against affirmative action are not fighting against the benefits it provides to the minority race/gender/etc... They are fighting against the negative affects it gives the majority race/gender/etc... The world is filled with economic scarcity, and whether they will admit it or not, trying to promote one group of people over another will always discriminate against the people on the margins of the majority party. These people who would have been good enough to get in on merit alone are discriminated against. They would have otherwise received a job offer from you except you decided to favor group x and they are a member of group y. How can this be classified as anything but discrimination?

Anyhow... thank goodness Sandra Day O'Conner has retired... maybe we can get a sane judgement from the supreme court (read 9 person oligarchy) now regarding the legality of affirmative action.

Actually, the fine print on the coupon not only says it is US only, but also "continental US" only. I guess that means no free ice cream for Hawaii or Alaska.

  11. Yes, but what about cost? on Fuel Cells for Laptop Computers · · Score: 5, Interesting

The article didn't seem to mention the cost of these new fuel cell batteries along with their refueling cartridges. I don't see anyone switching to new fuel cell batteries anytime soon unless the cost of the fuel cell and lots of refueling cartridges is approximately the same as a regular li-ion battery. Of course, the nice thing about this technology is that you would never actually need to plug anything in because the battery can't be recharged, just change the cartridge. Also raises the question of whether the fuel cartridges will be hot-swappable. Still, fuel cell batteries sound kewl. :)
