  1. Re:Inadvertent piggybacking is all too easy on Neighborhood WiFi Security · · Score: 1

So true. I used to do Help Desk work for a think tank in DC. One of the VP's (who had recently been high up in the State Department) told me that since he moved he could no longer connect to the internet. He tried to connect to the wireless "providers" in the area, but all of them said something about being secured. How could he subscribe to one?

How much confidential information was he transmitting over his previous neighbors' unsecured networks? I guess I'll never know.

It is true that Audio only won't work for all subjects, but it would be wonderful for foreign languages. I've been very disappointed with the listening exercises included in my French course. Instead of having 10-15 minute lessons in which you actually practice speaking, the exercises involve listening to a minute long conversation and then answering innane questions (in English). And they are web-based so I can't easily load them onto my ipod to listen to whenever I have some free time. A professor could easily create and post more interactive (well at least listen/repeat or respond) exercises that are still geared towards the vocabulary being studied at that time. Of course, it would be best if the university had a small sound booth used for creating the tracks.

  3. Balancing Work and Family on Gender Gap in Computer Science Growing · · Score: 1

While society has changed drastically in the past few decades, the mother is still the primary caretaker in most families. A large percent of IT jobs require significant amounts of overtime and/or odd hours, neither of which are conducive to raising a family (not that there aren't plenty of women who somehow manage it). Perhaps that has something to do with the gender gap. That being said, I enjoyed working in a predominantly male environment. I did leave because of the overtime; I wanted more free time because I am also a part-time student.

  4. Re:More than one console . . . on What's On Your Tech Bench? · · Score: 1

We wall mounted 4 15" LCD's. Since we usually had two people working at the Help Desk bench, this worked out much better than a KVM

You should also have an analog phone line for testing modems. If possible, I suggest an alternate high speed connection to the internet. For example, some of our network jacks were on DSL instead of our main network. They really came in handy when a VP brought in a malware/virus infested computer. In addition, it was great for bypassing those tricky firewalls.

We used large amounts of 90% rubbing alcohol and LCD screen cleaning spray. Qtips also come in handy for cleaning keyboards.

Although it doesn't have to be stored at the help desk bench, I suggest gaffers tape for taping down cords. It comes in lots of colors, sticks to carpet nicely and is easy to tear.

The Alien generator is key. Once it is activated, they can start mining and use the materials to build huge subdivisions of identical homes on 1/4 acre lots.

In the meantime, we can continue to overpopulate the earth. You can buy an SUV that only gets 12 miles to the gallon. You can cut down all of the trees and pollute all of the water. Because by 2050, there will be a brand new home awaiting you on beautiful Mars!

That article was like the Da Vinci Code for geeks. Scour the records for all of the technology out there (and all of Microsoft's purchases), make a bunch of assumptions and a few guesses and voila!: the future of Intel processors.

But seriously, it needs more action and some hot chick.

  7. Ag Neovo on Budget LCD Monitor Round-up · · Score: 1

It is too bad that they did not include an Ag Neovo monitor in the comparison. Although they are not well known, they make extremely affordable monitors. I am quite happy with the Ag Neovo I have and they tend to be highly rated in the customer reviews. It would have been interesting to see how they compared.
