the performance penalty for having pre-emptive multitasking is so small as to be unnoticeable if you are only doing one thing at a time.

for instance if you are in photoshop, working on a picture, and you have no other programs running, the penalty is probably under 1%.

the thing is, what if, while you are waiting for that filter to finish, you could be doing other productive work? pre-emptive tasking allows that.

as an example, say you are surfing the web, and you would like to do something else while waiting for a big web page to load over a slow modem. with the co-op mac scheduling, the computer often won't even respond until the page load is complete ( in my experience ).

with pre-emptive tasking, I can click on that link to a big page, then get back to some serious work while waiting for the star wars trailer to load.

  10. Color is a two edged sword on Color Palms to Debut in February? · · Score: 3

This may seem to be off topic, but stick with it, it applies.

The other day I walked into my bank. They had just replaced their old ATM machines with new ones. I thought "Great! now they'll be faster! and ooo, look, a pretty color touch screen!"

Well, the truth is, the new machines are slower on two counts.
    1. more proccessing required for color screen == slower transactions
    2. it is harder to discriminate the information that matters ( how much money do I want ) from the information I don't care about ( look, We have this new loan you can get and you only have to give us your third borne child! ) which also == slower transactions

the basic conclusion here is that there are places where color is a sensible useful thing and other situations where it is just plain harmful.

the key with the upcoming palms will be to:
    1. ensure that the old, B&W apps don't run any slower on the new machines.
    2. color is only used where it makes SENSE.
    3. new apps still run on B&W palm pilots, without a performance/memory penalty for being compatible with the new machines.

Or does the GPL allow for cases exactly like this where a derived work (Q2) exists prior to the GPL being attached to the precursor (Q1) means that the derived work is exempt?

all the home entertainment DVD players out there probably won't play an unencrypted DVD. (correct me if I'm wrong here) so an unencrypted dvd copy is useless EXCEPT to someone who wants to watch their DVD's ONLY on their computer (great on a laptop on a plane, but at home? come on!)

The big boys are gonna make a bit-for-bit complete copy of the DVD, INCLUDING the encrypted key, duplicate packaging and sell the ripoff copies for less than the "real thing".
