I don't have a college degree. I am working as a "Lead Diffusion Technician" for a large corporation. I had been doing this job hoping that another position as a Network Engineer (I really wanted) would open. The position opened, and I interviwed for it, and I was turned down. The part that really is frustrating is the person they hired has a poor work ethic, has zero experience, did a poor interview, but has a college degree in a non-related field.
I was told that they felt I wouldn't be able to handle engineering level issues. I have had numerous entries in my file about stream lining the production process and dealing with engineering level issues in my current position. I even have a few years experience! But I was turned down because I do not have a college degree.
I have read studies that show at higher non-entry level positions workers without college degrees are on average more productive. I have found this to be true(they have to work harder to get there), but it doesn't matter. The last poster was correct, "most companies are not willing to take a chance with you, however promising you claim to be."
