I agree with eddy, this has gotten to the point of beating a old horse to death, again. Besides, how did the reasearchers fid out that all the campus-related file-sharing was music. It could have been files for classes, possible, no?
Netscape didn't turn into Mozilla, Mozilla is based on the original Netscape gecko code and went its own way. Netscape continued on to the POS that it is today.
It's not about security holes. Refer to the gentleman above this and you will see it is BLOAT. The JVM uses massive resources each time is runs, and most people do not understand this. They play the little java games online and wonder why their internet is slow. Then they shut down the browser and the computer "speeds up" again. That's java for you! And it isn't limited to only one instance at a time, java can start as many times as it feels are needed, and each time more of the resources you have available are snatched.
There is a program available which will totally remove IE from any Windoze machine. Anybody ever hear of IEradicator? It completely removes any trace of IE from your computer, also expect to lose the active desktop functionality as it actually removes integrated web capabilities from the kernel.
Boy, you are way off bat. Mozilla is an active, hands-on browser. Designed for you to get involved in how it functions. Not like IE, which you don't have to do anything for it to get screwed up. So the active install and restart is the best way to go.
Mozilla is browsing as it should be, not a thing more than basics for main package, and then if you want more, you find/create the extras to add to it. IE just adds everything from the beginning, then you are constantly having to dig to turn it off.
