Hmm.. Let's see here.. Been running Firefox exclusively (with a minor exception of Windows updates, via "Help and Support" only on Windows XP for about 8 months now. Let's run a quick malware/virus scan and see what's infected. (No real-time malware/virus scanners installed.)
Hmm.. Virus scan? Nil. Malware? Nada. Problomatic sites? Zip. Damn.. I can't play a few free game sites that require IE and ActiveX. My loss. Oh wait.. I never played those anyway. Bummer for me.
But when you step into the realm of "hey, we've got this power-- let's waste it on something!". Then you're doing something really bad. Using pixel shaders to draw drop shadows on semitransparent textured menus or somesuch begins to fall into this territory.
Have to disagree with this. A more likely scenario is "hey, we've got this power -- let's take advandage of it!" In the case of Mac's, they're gaurenteed this power. Why not use it?! It not only makes the desktop manager snappier and prettier, but makes all levels of 2D graphical (and some 3D as well) interation faster. I, for one, (most definatly not a Windows fanatic) am certainly looking forward to Avalon and all that it has to offer.
Anything that allows graphical apps to run faster by default is a definate plus. Especially if minimal extensions and hooks become standard in the military/govt. standard world.:)
A bit distruntled by lack of support in a lot of military grade hardware for even the most minimal 2D acceleration.
Now if they can just get these things to read your emotions. Those park operators could just sit back and play a little game mapping the real park to a virtual world.
Just hope they don't integrate any "Black and White" technology.. I'd hate to go to Cedar Point and have the hand of god actually lift me up and drop me in the water because I can't find the bathrooms.. lol
Actually, I have to say amusement parks are one place I don't really mind being tracked. If they can do anything to make my visit smoother with less lines, by all means, do!
Speaking of features, my work W2K PC has this handy feature of rebooting every morning...
Come into work.
CTRL-ALT-DEL
Enter name / password.. fails..
CTRL-ALT-DEL
Enter name / password.. fails with
Application popup: Unlock Computer: winlogon.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x7c5b7057" referenced memory at "0x00020010". The memory could not be "read".
Press ok, machine reboots. Get coffee, morning chit-chat. Come back a half hour later and Voila!
Works fine after that.. Happens every time I log out for more than a few hours. And it's happened every time since the day I got this new development machine a year ago.
Of course, IT has no clue.

Can't think of a reason not to gloat.
