  1. Dual Edged Swords on How To Argue That Open Source Software Is Secure? · · Score: 1

As I see it your holding two dual edged swords. In the one hand you have code that can be reviewed by everyone. If someone finds a security vulnerability and choose not to report it that's one edge. The other edge is that you have more eyes reviewing the code so in theory security vulnerabilities are more likely to be found and fixed. In the other hand you have code that a select group of people review. If a security vulnerability is found by the vendor or a third party it may or may not get reported and fixed. The "advantage" being since not everyone can review the code theoretically fewer security vulnerabilities will be found, that does not mean they don't exist.

In either case if you are wearing body army, i.e. defense in depth, if you loose your balance you'll not be as badly hurt.

  2. Re:Er... on What Xbox Games Will Be Backwards Compatible? · · Score: 1

Exactly it depends on your point of view.
If you are a game and you were developed to run on the Xbox then you MIGHT be forward compatible with Xbox 360.
If you are the Xbox 360 you SHOULD have backwards compatibility with Xbox software including but not limited to (games, linux, FreeBSD, Xbox Media Center)
If you are Microsoft ANY form of compatibility, even with your own systems, is a forgein concept at best. Its more than likely you have never even heard of the word.

  3. Re:Evolved preferences on What Games Do Women Play? · · Score: 1

Yes there are biological aspects to why women may not play games as much as men. The biology of men and women does differ, each being better at different things. This initailly created roles in society. Men hunted and defened as you said, and women socialized and nurtured. These roles were part of society for along time and I don't think you can say society has no effect on a person.

And I am not trying "... to hide the differences between the sexes, as if such differences are somehow ugly" but rather say the roles of men and women in society are not as defined as they once were.

First off I think the person asking the question has not read /. Second I know there are women who read /. Third I don't think you can define what games women or men for that matter will and will not play and enjoy based on biology. Just because women traditionaly took certain roles in society does not mean that they are going to continue in those roles. So I think trying to determine the games women are going to play based on their traditional roles in society is BS. Does anyone else think that video games are assocaited or have been associated with the stereotypical geek. While we are all geeks here, or atleast trying to be. We must reember that /. is "News w/ a Nerd /. Fourth I want to say to the women of /. I'm sorry you have to put up with this BS.

  5. Some advice on Technological Solutions for the Partially Sighted? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Ok I happend to know alot about this stuff. First let me say I am too lazy and did not read the whole thread so forgive me if I am repeating what has already been said. I am not exactly sure what you are looking for or what you might think are the most useful. There are screen magnifiers ZoomText and WindowEyes which are the most common. I know ZoomText has a screen reader built into it (if you get level 2). I am not as familar with WindowEyes. Then there are screen readers Jaws is a very common screen reader. There are also some other programs that can be useful which are Kurzweil 1000/3000. 1000 is made for visually impared people pretty smiple basic interface. This program can be used to scan in text into the computer and then read it aloud. I know that Kurzweil 3000 is made more for dislexic people but I find some features useful. Both Kurzweil 1000/3000 come with a large selection of books in the public domain. I also know that the newer versions of Kurzweil 3000 can also download and read books from Bookshare.org and other sites that provide similar services. The nice thing about this feature is you can use the voices form Kurzweil to read the text. I have to say that the voices are pretty good sound still have some problems but are better than the ones that come with Mac's. Yes it is also true that windows XP and 2000 have screen magnifiers and screen readers. Though there are better ones out there. Most of the software will cost a chunk of change so I would research your options before investing. Anyway that is my 2 cents
