  1. I decided to do my shopping online this year... on Study Says 25% of Online Transactions Go Wrong · · Score: 2

I bought from 3 different oneline stores. All three screwed the order up completely. One never sent a confirmation email, and it took 3 emails and one phone call to finally get a confirmation of my order, which appeared on my answering machine.

Another one sent 3 different messages saying that the order had gone through, hadn't gone through and had been rejected. I finally called customer support and was told they had no record of the order. I ordered over the phone.

The third was Amazon, I ordered a 3-pack of MST movies with Manos. They sent three different movies, no Manos. I sent them several emails telling them what had gone wrong, so they sent me another package. It was the same 3 wrong movies. I sent them another email, which resulted in them asking me to return everything, since they don't really stock the stuff I'd ordered, and they had already credited my credit card. No "How would you like to handle this," no "Would you like to keep these movies instead," nothing.

Still, I've done my shopping from the office at lunch and everything was delivered there. Despite the hassle, it was still better than doing the Road Warrior thing in the parking lot at the mall.

With all of this misinformation floating around, I thought this would be a good time to learn about our solar system from the former national expert himself, Dan Quayle:

"Mars is essentially in the same orbit. Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, which is very important. We have seen pictures where there are canals, we believe, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. If there is oxygen, then we can breathe."

I know that there have also been a few questions about NASA and people possibly losing faith in them due to the recent problems with the Mars projects. Dan, once again, reassures us:

"For NASA, space is still a high priority."

Buck up, kids, as Dan says, "The future will be better tomorrow."

I've just noticed that there is a lot of anger out there, especially in younger kids. I think it has a lot to do with the constant barrage of extremely well-targeted, psychologically-researched marketing.

Think about it -- just about every second of the day, you're constantly pushed to buy something. And as time goes on, the marketing people are getting better and better at targeting you through psychological research. Ever wonder how much of your extremely valuable memory space is taken up by ad campaigns (past and present) by McDonald's and Coca-Cola? Eventually it all becomes intrusive noise that is difficult to block out, and it becomes nothing but a big mish-mash of greed, greed, greed and more greed.

Is it any wonder that schizophrenia is on the rise, when there are very real voices coming at us from everywhere, as marketing people keep installing more and more monitors and speakers everywhere they can?

Exactly who is "we," and why are we cracking down? And at exactly what point in your life did you decide that religion precludes humor? I mean, noone in the world is allowed to make jokes about your personal religion?

What is it about so many religious people that makes them so completely self-righteous?

And really, what exactly is it about Jesus that is supposed to relate to this pagan festival? It certainly has absolutely nothing to do with his birthday. Christmas is a hell of a lot older than Jesus, and his real birthday is a lot closer to Easter than it is to Christmas.

See, the joke with Jesus battling Satan is that it's a parable. You've studied the bible, you understand those. Christmas is an ancient pagan ritual which the Christians adopted in an effort to convert the pagans -- they came into northern Europe saying, "You have a spring festival and a winter festival? What luck, they happen to fall exactly on the days of the birth and death of the deity we worship. How convenient."

What exactly do eggs have to do with Easter? Nothing. They're symbols of fertility, the symbols of the pagan spring festival. What exactly do pine trees and gifts and Santa Claus have to do with Jesus? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

So the next time you're going on about, or listening to someone going on about, how the fetivities and commercialization are ruining Jesus' birthday, remember that the festivities were there first. Jesus was tacked on later.

  14. Re:This is why I use IBM's JDK on Corporate vs Open Source:Sun Stealing Blackdown? · · Score: 1

Well, this is most likely why Sun has done this.

I mean, they're late on getting their ideas to the ECMA for standardization, so they're looking at losing a little control, and here comes IBM with not only faster runtime environments, but support for Linux. If IBM put out the first supported (and very fast) Java 2 RE for Linux, Sun would show up a day late and a dollar short.

So, Sun needs to get their name into this market first. Most likely they've previously signed some sort of strategic agreement with Inprise (since there appears to be absolutely no other reason for Inprise's name to have anything to do with this), and they release Blackdowen's work as their own. Legally, I might add, due to their licensing agreement.

This whole debate strikes me as amusing in the context (and only in this context) of the debate the other day on movie credits (and Apple no longer including credits)... Kinda brings that whole argument full circle quite neatly.

I do the installers/ports of our product to various platforms for a small software company, and we require a 1.2.2 JRE. Blackdown has been there all along to make sure that we've got a release for Linux. I'll make sure that at least in our releases, they get the credit due them.
