  1. To be a Geek or Not to be a Geek on Uncle Robin's Advice for Lovelorn Geeks · · Score: 1

This article really got me thinking. It is probably why I am writing another comment.

Why does matter? You are who you are. However, I have read several opinions about this article that seem to claims something different.

Clothes are an extension for some people. However, some people don't care about how they dress for others. It could be what ever is comfortable to them, and they don't even have to match. Some people just put something on and go.

I already have a great fellow, but this is how this geekette rates guys for dating or relationship potential:

    1. Personality -- Good Soul
    --Intelligence
    --Honesty
    --Humble
    --Confidence
    --Willingness to give to others
    --Natural affinity for caring
    --Goofy Sense of Humor
    --Appreciates nature
    --Reliable
--Easy to talk to + some

    2. Hygeine
    --sticky armpits & feet acceptable
    --any thing growing...not acceptable
--bad breath --- no way eck!
    --limited clothing clothing stains

    3. Smile
--How can you beat a warm fuzzy?

  2. Women and Geeks on Uncle Robin's Advice for Lovelorn Geeks · · Score: 1

I am woman. I love computers. I think the article was nice, but I have to say something about that first paragraph.

I love computers. They take up a big part of my life. You can call me a geek. However, I love other things such as art, reading, languages, science, writing poetry, science, philosophy, Einstein.

Who says I am incapable of taking care of a lovely geek guy? I must know how because I have been dating the same computer geek for five years and I madly in love with him as him with me. I think that I am pretty, attractive, and plain. I am plain in the sense that I refuse to wear makeup. It is garbage that in the long run ruins your skin. And thanks to not having ever worn makeup my complication is wonderful.

I am bit hurt to hear that we should need to pamper men. Affection is something that is not a requirement. It is a natural giving to the one you love. Me and My boyfriend love each other deeply. We are best friends. We have times where neither of us requires affection. Sometimes just being around one another is enough.

We don't disturb one another while we are doing something else. We give each other equal space.
I will visit him when he is busy on the computer while he is doing his own thing just to be around him while I am doing something for myself.

Just because I am a geek doesn't mean I don't have time for my favorite guy.

I have taken care of him while he was sick risking myself to exposure. I have cooked for him because I wanted to be kind. He has done the same for me.

However, don't expect me to be this doting housewife with a permanent smile embossed on my lips.

I certainly don't think of the man as the breadwinner. People have to work together. Separatism only leads to frustration and sadness.

I work to provide for myself, and we share with one another benefits of knowledge, kindness, money, and time.

    I am a very lucky woman. =)

  3. Re:Let's crucify the strange and ugly people on How Not to Attract Geeks · · Score: 1

Your comment is right on the money.
I am 22, and I have tried to understand both sides of the fence. Woman to Man; Man to Woman.

If you look at it. Media & Discrimnating/stereotypical cultural ideals have caused all of these problems. Why do so many people flock to the herd only to increase their problems? Why do some people only see things in terms of what others want them to see?

Sometimes I feel like I am living in 'Gattaca.' Where everything is predetermined.

I searched for a while for a guy who could share my interests and thoughts with. I liked the idea of someone I could work with and spend times revealing deep meaningful innerself things with.

I got rejected as many times as guys say they do because I was not the image that was provided by trends. After awhile, I just decided to stand and look. I waited. Then, that special guy who was just right walked by. I didn't have to flag him down. We just naturally had something in common, and it began with a movie.

I have been dating the same guy for five years. He is not tall. He is not skinny. He is not fat. He is not good looking. He is not ugly. He is all the man he could ever be by being himself. I see only the little soul inside him. The joy and comfort he shares with me can outbeat anything Tom Cruise has to offer.

However, what are most normal men after?
What does the media betray? sex? a beautiful body? & smile?

Don't people know that we are going to grow old, get wrinkled? It is the life process!

So really what are people waiting for when it comes to companionship or love?

I wish I could understand all of this biased bs.

  4. My Favorite Nerd: A FairyTale Come True on How Not to Attract Geeks · · Score: 1

My favorite nerd, is my boyfriend.

Have you ever heard that song that says:"If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, go make an ugly woman your wife."

I think of that phrase in terms of nerds.
They are best bunch of blokes a woman can have.

It is not because of money. It is not because of power. They are true to themselves. The majority of them are not pretentious or hedonistic. They love to learn and do complex things. They can appreciate the extra things in life.

I admit, I am not Britney Speakers, I just don't see why some of you drool over her. I am not Cindy Margolis either.
I am a nerd girl who just happens to be sweet, extra cute, and attractive to boot. I am kind and gentle girl from next door.
Well, I can't honestly say next door. I grew up on a farm, and I moved to the city when I was in middle school. When I was younger, I already had the appreciation for nerd guys. They were the fun ones --building rockets and blowing up stuff. Playing with Logo. You guys remember Logo, right? ;)
Well, I met my boyfriend in high school. It was an instant attraction. He loved computers, and he has been working with them since he was 3 when he got his first Coco.
I managed to save up and got my own PC. He taught me a great deal because I had too much experience with Macs rather than IBM compatibles.

I learned so much, and we have been progressing along together from our interests in BEAM and LINUX...as well as other stuff too.

I couldn't ask for a better fellow. Sometimes, you nerd fellows on Linux Irc channels give girls a hard time. Give a chance. We might surprise you. Some of us actually want to know more about Linux and programming.

Well, I will always be a nerd guy's girl. It just the cup o' tea I prefer.

You nerd guys should stop drooling over the likes of Britney Spears, and take a look at the beautiful nerd women around you.

Love you all you nerds!!! Keep the coding going!!

  5. My Favorite Nerd on How Not to Attract Geeks · · Score: 1

Do you recall that song that says:
"Do you want to be happy for the rest of your life, go make an ugly women your wife."

I take that principle to heart.
"Do you want to be happy for the rest of your life, go make a make a nerd guy your hubby."

I am not your typical girl. I am not your britney spears, I only fathom why some of you drool over her --eck--, nor am I Cindy Margolis. I am pretty and attractive. I am down to earth, and I am the girl next door with extra umpf...a brain.

I am a big lover of intelligence. I don't crave looks, I don't crave money, I crave my favorite nerd who whistles and sings hex code.

I love my favorite nerd, who thinks Einstein is awesome, and sits in front of his computer chugging down jolt at midnight, coding. I like playing quake with my favorite nerd to let my out aggressions. I like making my kernel with his assistance when I am in over my head.

My favorite nerd is my boyfriend, who adores Linux like a brother, Einstein like a father, and me as his best friend.

    NERD stands LOVE!!

Ok..I admit to being silly, but is my nature. I am geek girl, always been, and you can't take that away from me.

  6. Music Cloning vs. Human Ethics on Simulating Human Musical Performance · · Score: 1

I am very torn on this issue.
I know that I will contradict myself by writing any of the thoughts I have on this issue.
I admit that right now as we are speaking.

My boyfriend and I clash on the subject of man vs. machine. He thinks that technology is beautiful and should replace man. What he means is that it is great to see things like music and literature from a machine etc etcera take the place of man. He thinks it is best for man to adopt the machine.

What about the parallels of "Dune" ? "Thou shall not make a machine in the likeness of the mind"

Machines are very useful. However, should they replace the abilities that we possess or able to do with our hands and minds?

Some would say that our potential is driven by the technology field.

I think it is important that our interests are cultivated. There is something about us accomplishing something. If we carve a guitar out of wood and string it there something special in it. We knew we able to do this with our limbs.

Does a handicap person want to be rolled around all the time by someone else? We need our independence.

However, Technology should be advanced in respect to this. It should not take advantage of humanity.
Humans may be controlling the appartus so thus I implore that we don't take advantage of our inner ability.

Should really play God and destroy our own species?

Baby steps come before adult steps.

Just a thought. But I love the idea of computers being able to span such great feats.

  7. And From "Root" to Infinity & My Bottle of Jolt! on MTV's Hacker Portrayal · · Score: 1

I watched the special on MTV with an open mind. I tried not to laugh over what was said and what was done. All - in - all the special really was a overdripping pile of suggy suds. I wish MTV would lay off the overdramatization of issues/situations that are going on in our everyday world.

I was part of a hacking/phreak team for a good amount of time. It was never about "OOOH...I got to get in there...I got to steal some stuff...." or "Yeah..I swipe video stream etc etc..." I really enjoyed the > whole "got to get that disk scene."

I am not trying to say that these guys are bad or evil, but something needs to be said about who hackers and phreakers really are. My friends and I were always going down to Radio * to buy transistors and such to phreak. It wasn't about I am going to charge someone a lot of money. We looked to see how electronics operated. It was also the same thing for us about hacking. We wanted to know why file hierarchies were set up. We wanted to know the truth about things, but it didn't mean going into someone's personal station in life.

Be realistic. We need to be informed. It is just a shame that the world as we know holds back from us because they always feel threatened from up above.

I don't hack anymore. I have had my time inthis moment ofmy life. I am 22 and I am way by far more interested in BEAM and Linux. Hacking for me has turned into something different. It has metamorphized into the challenge, finding ways to solve solutions. I look for reason behind the riddle. I am not necessarily looking for the entire riddle. I am taking it a piece at time.

You may say that is hacking. Hacking to me was about finding the solution from other people. I have realized that I have to find the solutions on my own.

Well lots of love to you guys who still pursue the knowledge of life and its inner stuff. I happy sitting on me bum in front of my puter tooling around with mr. tux and a big big bottle of Cherry Bomb JOlt!

Those guys are awesome. If you like synth ambient/trance..I highly recommend a band called Synaesthesia or early Delerium albums before Semantic Spaces.

  9. Linux & The Girl on Women in the Open Source/Free Software Communities? · · Score: 1

I can really relate to what Sparkles was saying in her reply. I am a girl, and I can tell you that regardless of what people say to other people... Girls, are not always given a warm welcome in the bruhaha of technology and men. Girls are given the impression still that playing with dolls, doing your hair, and painting your face along with gossip and getting with guys is the way to go. How many magazines do you see with painted ladies on the cover in skimpy clothes? What a wonderful image to give to us?

However, this is more about gals and technology. Guys are nurtured to explore more fields dealing with electronics and other fascinating do-dads of Science. I think is important to encourage girls to check out technology and science. The more heads we have working on ideas to advance these fields the more useful and imaginative things we will have at our disposal.

I have been playing with Linux for almost two years. I don't claim to be a professional. However, no more matter how much I feel swamped, I continue to push myself to learn new stuff regarding Linux. I sometimes feel there is no support for me, but it doesn't get me down.

I joined with a couple of people a year ago and formed a LUG. I have learned a lot. We actually got some guys from COREL to come down and talk about what they are doing with Linux. It has been a rewarding experience. I am attempting to teach myself PERL. So there, I would like to think, is a place for us women here, I just hope you guys don't mind our lovely company.

Anyhow, you geek boys especially you Linux are the hottest, smartest, and best to know. I love you guys......
