Your example of Wilco's album only costing a few thousand dollars is completely bogus. This was not a cheap album to produce. I bet Jim O'Rourke is getting more than a few thousand dollars for his job of mixing alone.
Even with guitarist Jay Bennett having his own studio and acting as engineer, Reprise paid Wilco to make this album, Wilco bought Yankee Hotel Foxtrot from Reprise for $50,000 (a steal). You can bet Nonesuch shelled out a bit more to get their hands on it.
Section 1008 says that a company who makes/sells/distributes recording devices/mediums cannot be sued because their device could be used for copyright infringement.
It protects Plextor if I use their CD burner to make a bunch of copies of the new Backstreet Boys CD. I don't see where it protects the users.

Carmack's post was to discuss how it looks like Apple finally is beginning to get their s**t together. He still thinks MacOS is a lame platform for the 90s, considering every other mainstream OS (and most non-mainstream OSs) have modern OS architectures (with memory protection, pre-emptive multitasking, virtual memory, etc) 4. If you put a 3dfx in an iMac and nothing in a P2-400 and run a 3d game that wants 3d accel, then OF COURSE the iMac will be faster. But ONLY because of the 3D acceleration. Put an iMac with a Voodoo next to a P2-400 with a Voodoo, and everyone who actually does their homework will know that the P2-400 is faster. 5. Mac users need to get out of their brainwash that the current MacOS is so great. It's a terrible OS from a programmer's perspective due to lack of modern architecture. It's just good that Apple is FINALLY figuring it out. And yes, I've developed on Win32, Unix, Mac, BeOS, Dos, Amiga, Apple 2, C-64, etc etc etc. MacOS X looks like it could be a great OS.
Summing it up: Do a bit of research and get rid of the bias. Apple HAS fell behind over the last few years, and they realize it. All Carmack said is that MacOS sucks to develop for, get rid of it. Apple said, "we are". Carmack said, "OK, groovy."

LP's have their own set of problems, even under ideal circumstances you have.
A higher noise floor
More crosstalk between channels
A signal to noise ratio that goes to hell as the needle head towards the center of the record
Everytime you play it, the needle scrapes away at the vinyl constantly reducing the sound quality.
That said, vinyl does have it's values, I find the clicks, pops and "warmth" (aka distortion) soothing.
