My wife will soon (in 2 years) be attending law school, and wishes to focus on constituational law. I am an avid open source user and programmer. We have discussed free software legal issues, read your books, and listened to talks by you. . . She isn't a programmer (or a techie).
So my question: What would you recommend for a student of law (in regards to open source legal issues). Where are the places to study (under you, or does location matter?)? What should her focus be? Are there internships or volunteer work you would recommend (within EFF or GNU or ?)
all those multinational corps now have a great money making scheme. If they don't have enough funds, just go "plant" a few their patented seeds and then sue the people...
Seriously if genetic modified plants run rampant (think kudzu in America) are we obligated to destroy it and pay a penalty for not licensing it.
On a more probable example, crops which have been modified to be resistant could increase the cost for farmers who have to work hard to remove stray seeds blown in by the wind. Should the MNC's be liable for damages when the farmers have to spend time + money removing unwanted genetic crops?
I am worried about genetics taking away taste in foods. Many people don't know how good tomatoes can taste. The beefmaster/roma/... tomatoes that were propogated before genetic engineering cannot compare to the antique varieties which taste great.
Although it is not GPL, it probably isn't violating it as longs at the modifications they made to linux are available in source. If you actually read the EULA it states that the license that you are reading excludes others software and they are under whatever license it says. (such as gpl for linux). What they are talking about other than linux, netscape, real player, etc... that is the software which is under the EULA is beyond me since they probably only configured the files and maybe did a custom load thing or something small... If it was a modification to gpl software it must be available, but if it is original it doesn't, but it seems pretty cheap for them to take advantage of the linux communitee without giving something back....
The v2fs is made for streaming media. It is not meant to be a complicated FS. We are working on adding support for other FS types, because we want the good part of v2fs for streaming, but ext2/whatever for directories,etc..
it is different, not neccessarily bad, just a different goal.... v2fs is made to have extremely good access/sending...
That was a statement before they changed it to gpl... and since it is now under gpl. the gpl license applies!

The reason we (many of the coders for v2 os) wanted it open was not to be a linux wanabe.. It was not to get attention! It is nice that it is posted on slashdot, since that is where I found it (a few weeks ago), so others can find it.
The reason we wanted it open source is because we wanted to see what was happening inside so we could program for it better.
And as for your idea that slashdot caused this, I know that this is not the fact. It is because around a hundred programers have been working with v2 since it was released and we convinced them it the benifit would outweights the negatives.
So your theory that this was for slashdot or anything like that is totally off base...
Only a small number where interested? not really, we have had an active IRC channel and many developers for weeks. The developers said they were getting hundreds of emails a day inquiring about internal parts of the os! your complete argument is false! Many people have been working on V2 os for weeks before it was open sourced!

you can go to: V2 Labs - The official V2 OS Page Dash - the first and only shell for v2 os The V2OS Project Manager - By JayTaph Nerdhero's v2os site - the home for the standard c lib as well as other stuff tRen's v2os site - extremely out of data (2 weeks!) V2 Demo Coder's site - if you are a demo coder go here! #v2os channel site - the page for #v2os on effnet... most of these places have either downloads of the source, etc. or links to another site with it!
Merry Christmas, and in defense of this operating system, I would like to say that we are creating a developers environment..... We are not looking towards creating the most portable or even something for regular users... The V2 Labs guys (who created this in the first place) created this with a goal of maximizing multimedia. This operating system boots in about 1 second. So you can eventually have this sucker being your mp3 player in your car, or anything else and guess what... It will boot in 1 second!
Why would anyone want to work with this? I work with it because there is a lot needed to make this a fully functional operating system. I don't know about most of you, but I wasn't able to help contribute to the base of any other operating system, and the experience for me is a good one. It may not turn out to be everything we want, but I am learning a lot about shells and operating systems.
Speaking of shells, if you want to get a shell for V2 OS, go to v2dash.hypermart.net It is up to version 0.007a (codename Golden Eye). It is open source, so if you want to help in the coding of a shell (unix style), now is a great opertunity..... Last of all Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukkah, and have a good day if you don't observe either of these holidays!
I may be wrong but if I remeber right, DOOM does not allow you to have a two story building. By this I mean a building which you can walk on one floor and also on the floor above it. No tunnels which go under a walkway, etc. We need to get this added. If this can be added, and if doom has openGL support (don't know, been since my dos days since I have played games), we can have quite a bitchin engine.... Does anyone want to work on this? I would like to. Jesse Andrews andrews@physics.berea.edu PS. Don't flame me if my info about the doom engine is incorrect please. Unfortunately I have to spend most of my time doing oracle forms development instead of games now!
It would be a nice feature to have a page where you typed in the site you wanted to look at and it would check it every 20-30 minutes until it got the page. If it got it, It would show it to you, if it didn't, it would try again in 20-30 minutes... use a meta-refresh that query's a cgi with the web address you want. The cgi will go get the page and forward it to your browser (If/. did it, put your ad or whatever on top) if it times out, put a message such as Sorry Page still unresponsive trying again in 10 minutes and the header has a meta-refresh to query itself in 10 minutes or whatever... just an idea.. I would love to see some of these/.ed sites sometime.
Maybe opensource companies can put some money towards a open source hardware project. I am sure that VA Linux (or Systems or whatever their offical name is) would love to have some new powerful hardware. Hardware has basically stood still since the XT. Sure we have fast and faster graphics, better sound, bigger harddrives, but the backbone is the same as every except for faster. Maybe an open source hardware project could do for that field what it has done for software. the x86 architecture is dated, we need to update it.
I think that OSS will continue to thrive as long as those who IPO and become worth trillions still adhere to the principles. Redhat has a history of providing for the community by releasing it's developments in GPL. I hope that this continues.
I started thinking of how the community should deal with this when I first heard about the Redhat IPO. I think that a non-profit organization should be set up that Companies who are wealthy because of Linux and Open Source can contribute to that will help the continued development. It could use the money to provide machines, manuals, whatever to projects in the open source area. I think it is also important that the organization not be tainted by people in suits making decision about how and what to work on..... We should get one of these going. Then Redhat or any company who wanted to do the right thing and contribute to the further development could indirectly help all of open source, while not tainting it! (whooo that was a mouth full)

Differential Equations
Linear Algebra
