  1. Re:The language is secondary on Java as a CS Introductory Language? · · Score: 2

Well, I wouldn't even exclude the 'obscure' languages. In my first year of University, we did Scheme. It was fine because nobody knew it, and therefore, we didn't come in with any assumptions/libraries/tricks.

But all the concepts were easy enough to teach/learn in that language. Don't forget that a language is merely a tool. Some tools are better than others for various jobs. But it is what is being taught that is important. If you want to teach somebody how to use a language, that's one thing, but teaching somebody how to solve problems doesn't even require a computer language.

But isn't the point that all Yahoo! servers were subject to doing business as the French courts wanted, even if they weren't based in France? That's what seems a little strange to me. I mean, take the US encryption laws. If I'm a company with a branch in the US, does that mean that my home branch has to comply with US encryption laws? (Maybe, since IANAL).

It's not always about latency (games, real time stuff), sometimes it's just about the bandwidth (downloading movies, music, other large software).

And if you've never had the bandwidth before (as this is designed for), then you'll be glad to have it, even with the latency issues (which you probably had with the phone line).

But that's also 25% of future profits. Is that normal, as well? Somewhere up above, somebody mentioned getting natural gas at 1920s prices--it pays itself off over time, and then some. Seems like 25% of future profits would do the same.

Berkeley also has their MOSS, which TA's and prof's may have heard of:

I think it probably takes a look at a pseudo-compiled version. That's what I'd do, anyhow.

  10. Multiple meanings of 'stink' on Linus Responds To Mundie · · Score: 2

From Mirriam-Webster's online dictionary for 'stink':

1 : to emit a strong offensive odor
2 : to be offensive; also : to be in bad repute
3 : to possess something to an offensive degree
4 : to be extremely bad in quality

    And for 'stink up':
    Main Entry: stink up
    Function: transitive verb
    Date: 1941
: to cause to stink or be filled with a stench

I think it's safe to say that the intended meaning was 'to cause to stink,' where stink is the second meaning, or the third or fourth with an implied 'something' (either the something in 3, or the quality that is bad in 4) that is not a personal attack.

  11. Re:Double click on A Home For The Technologically Inept · · Score: 1

Double clicking, dragging, and the whole concept of the mouse is fairly difficult if you haven't seen it before. In an HCI course I took, we saw videos of people who thought they had to hold the mouse up to the screen, who couldn't drag-select using the mouse, and who held the mouse backwards (so that the 'tail' of the mouse faced the user).

Sounds pretty stupid now, but you can bet somebody did a little research on the correct way to make the mouse so that users who held it incorrectly were uncomfortable. And if you think about it, why on earth does the mouse's 'tail' not face you? Isn't it more intuitive that moving the mouse's 'head' forward would move the pointer forward? There's the issue of the cord being in the way, but it's in the way no matter how you position it.

Just remember that even if the Dvorak layout helps, you still need things like good posture, not resting your wrists on hand-rests, taking breaks, stretching your wrists, not resting your hands on the keyboard.

The Dvorak layout is nice (I use it), but is only part of a complete solution.
