I understand your point about more control over users, but with NT you basically get two choices.
1) Users can change anything.
2) Users can change nothing.
Now, mind you, we administer 240 PC's, and 120 X-terminals. While the amount of time spent fixing PC's is not catistropic, it is considerably larger that time spent on the X-terms.
That being said, the real plus to the X side of things is total control over the environment, total configurability and total application server transparency. Most of our business applications run on this platform. Solid, stable, easy to manage/confiugre, and runnable on PC's too with X clients. You can have the best of both worlds, the PC headace only where Office type apps are needed. Centralized/X/Web apps for all running the business" stuff. On top of that I'm toying with the idea of shoehorning in StarOffice for viewing MS Office apps on the X side of things
Arguments can be made for both sides, but an "open" environment model gives you flexibility for the future. It takes more work to develop, but it pays off.
Looks like its time for the Feds. to switch to Free/GPL/Open Source software:-)
Franly the main reason I like Linux so much is the total freedom from these liscense hassles. My group waste alot of time keeping track of liscenses.
The other model I like is the comes with the machine, upgrades free based on the support contract. Any other type of liscense (keep this crummy peice of paper forever types) is just a hassle.
I would think that a colorblind person (like me) would prone to add more contrast to a diagram, not less. I know that I have trouble seeing minor color changes (bright color to white) than I have seeing major changes ( white on black, or white on blue, green on black, etc.).
So, enough with the colorblind references already;-).
Last time I checked there were something like 18 states involved in the case against Microsoft. If the DOJ backs out, look for Boies to begin working for one of the states involved. They will not drop the case.
In the end the Supreme Court will have the final say on Microsoft.
Actually I think remember reading (this was a long time ago now) that the Earth-Moon is more a binary planet than planet-satellite type system. Meaning that the Earth and Moon actually rotate around a point in space (closer to Earth due to its larger mass).
Did you see the split in the votes last night? Half the country doesn't wan the other guy to be president. For every person who thinks Bush will screw things up there's another person who thinks Gore will.
This election actually shows a problem in american elections. Half of the people who voted will have someone with vastly opposing views to their own in the white house. There is no middle ground, there is only partisanship and gridlock.
Ummmm, or perhaps we could just scrap the whole electoral college and elect the president on popular vote. It would be alot better than the cludge of "trading" votes.
BTW: I would happily trade my vote to elect Bush instead of Gore.
I'm glad you're another one of those "open minded" democrats who allows for free speech as long as I say something you agree with. BTW: I'm not rich, but I am Repbublican, and there are reasons for that, but you wouldn't care to hear them.
Forget it, it's not even worth it. You can't even have a logical, civil debate, without calling the other side names.
Gee, I'm wondering how bad things (free speach, class warfare, bad government programs we all have to pay for) could be after 4 years under a very, very liberal president.
I'd love it if the list of federal programs was actually even close to that short, I'd add funding research and space exploration and be done with it. However, the list of federal programs is a little longer than that, and that is the problem. It appears both candidates have a commitment to increasing that list of programs even though many of us don't want it.
Amen, brother. I work for one of the companies you mentioned and have worked for another one of them. You are correct, they are technical leaders.
In response to the comment this post will land under (assuming your viewing nested).
To talesout: If you don't like SD, leave. No one is stopping you. I'll agree that Sioux Falls has some strange city ordinances. I espically like the don't feed the geese or else one (but thats another story). All in all I like it better out here, if you don't then go. You remind me of a friend of mine who always talked about going to the big city (MPLS/ST. Paul), years later he's still in South Dakota. The reason I think he's still here is that he actually likes it. You however, just appear to want to complain instead of do something about it.

Ooops please read above comment as:
You must be lucky I guess.
Sorry....

Just because its "old" material doesn't make it any less pertinant to a discussion about MS liscensing strategies.
If they bait and switch once, they'll do it again.
Ahhh yes. I can remember when MS said that NT Server would never require you to buy client liscences.
Later on they told us they only ment NT 3.1 and 3.51 and added charges for client liscences.
Never believe how "good" a deal MS software is.
I think I remember seeing in an HP magazine somewhere that Openmail is being ported to Linux.
There my be hope for you yet...
Ummm.. actually, since you wouldn't allow attachments with exchange, PINE would have more features ;-).
Yeah, Windows and X is all you've ever seen on your PC. But Scottie in ST4 was using a Mac!! ;-)

Dumb people have a right to vote...
They do not have a right to say "Ooops, I think I voted wrong, can I vote again."
This is just like sports, sometimes you only get one shot, its up to you to make it count. And with voting you can get help if you need it.
People must be allowed to vote once and only once. It's one man one vote, not one man one vote unless you think you might have made a mistake.
I would have loved to see someone tell my 79 year old grandma (in Florida) that she couldn't have another ballot if she had made a mistake on hers.
That would have been a hell of a battle!
As it is, I'm very sure her correct vote for Bush got counted.
If they had trouble with the ballot they should have asked for help, that is well within their rights.
If I try and fix my car (I'm no automechanic) and ruin it in the process its my own damn fault for not asking for help. Its the same in this case.
Pllleeeaaseee!!!

If Microsoft retains tight control on the API's so that they are the only major game ventdor for the XBox, it WILL fail.

I would love to see about 3-4 Libertarians make it into the US Senate. That would be just enough to start shaking things up a bit.
Actually it sounds like a good system for distributing a worm.

Huh? What did you read? Both replys are open to wide interpretation. Neither of these posts would even count as a stance.
I don't think it matters anyway. File sharing ala Napster will not be stopped.
