Big Pharma have more than enough internal resources to do this sort of stuff, added to which I'd be very suprised if they wanted details of what would be a very early stage project potentially leaking into the public domain.
KDE vs GNOME or Gentoo or yet another Linux desktop, whatever you choose someone will always want to include there own favourite. I'd include MacOSX (I know its not Linux) in the comparison, if only because it appears to designed around the interface. As new functionality is added the way the user will interact with it seems to be part of the design process rather than an afterthought.

I suspect it is now possible to use Xcode for just about every language. I must admit I quite like having the same environment for all my projects from Applescript to ObjC

You can use Xcode to program in almost any language you choose Cocoa, C, Java, Ruby....
