"It didn't seem to me like any single company had the stomach to keep after the scum that are ruining the Net for the rest of us."
I don't know about the rest of you, but spam doesn't trouble me in the slightest. It's been a number of years since I've actually seen spam getting through to my inbox more than every 6 months. Hotmail was blocking it fine, and gmail does an admirable job. Sure, it's illegal, but I don't really give a shit as to how companies are going to stop it, it really doesn't affect me.
People have been extorting idiots for centuries, this is just another form of it. A fool and is money are easily parted, they say. This proves it true, and I have no qualms with all this trash floating around the 'net, the idiots who click on things like this would be losing their money regardless.
From the Article: "He believes in an open source approach to the task of programming life, modeled explicitly on the open source approach to programming computers, long popular at MIT."
My friend recently met a man who invented the "shotgunning" technique for DNA (it was either that or improved the speed drstically, and I can't for the life of me remember his name), but he also held the idea of Open Sourcing all DNA he found to be important. He now travels around the world and collects specimens to release into the public domain, for the fear that corporations might one day have a stranglehold on organisms' DNA.
And all us linux geeks here think a Microsoft World (tm) is scary; imagine buying an Starbucks Cat from the local petstore.
Yeah, this is the first thing that came into my mind as I read slashdot in lynx, however, I wasn't able to log in to post. So, the tradeoff is there: being immune to some silly vulenerability, or having a completely functional browser. Take your pick..
My friend went to the International Biology Olympiad, which is basically the sister project of this one. She had loads of fun, so I wish all the best to the kids competing in this competition.
One point to note, perhaps:
The people who are in this coding competition are all kids in school. This is not determining the fastest coder in the world, it's determining the best young coders. Just thought I'd clear that up.. =)
In his Children of the Mind book, they find an alien civilization on a planet that communicated via DNA, and i thought that oidea was wonderfully original.
For example, the aliens give their space craft a messege that resembles, very much so, a cocaine molucule. The crew had to work out whether they aliens were trying to say "hey, have some cocaine, join the party!", or whether they were drugging them and boarding the ship.
I don't know about most of you gamers out there, but running a fictional porn empire kinda sounds boring, to the extreme. I know that i'd never buy the game, T&A or no. It's just stupid, something that a person would make a joke flash game out of.
If you buy this game, you're most likely an idiot.

I must agree with you, I too bought B and W the day it came out, and I was terribly excited. However, it ran slowly (not my computer's fault at all..), and got repititive and quite boring after a while.
Damn that Molyneux is good at hyping his games.
(the story was written by a hollywood writer and was the hardest aspect to implement)
It's alright that he wants to touch as many people as possible, but you have to understand that he's not the only one who gets rich from the movie. A lot of people are riding on the success of that movie, so it's fine for him to say it about his personal fortune.
However, it's not really fair to those who need this movie to generate profit.
However, i'm all for piracy.. just think that his reasons are a bit weak.
First, Sony have owned 18% of Square-Enix (which was Squaresoft at the time) since 2001, see this for details/proof on that.
That makes them the secone largest shareholder in the company, and as I see it, that is a large enough number to have a noticible impact on deciding which machines they develop their killer apps for.
And as to your Kameo-Rare-Microsoft comments, don't you think that I made it clear it would never be a realised dream?
I would hope that anyone reading Slashdot Games would know about that $M350 deal, there's certainly no need to remind me.
Sony won't let that happen. And, because they have such a large share in Square-Enix, I think that they have the power to stop that. The FF games are one of the larget money makers in the video games world, and Sony want it exclusive. They're willing to let Square have some free reign, with their GBA titles and that silly Crystal Chronicles, because they know that it won't sell many gamecubes machines. Final Fantasy sells PS2s, sony doesn't want it selling 'Cubes.
But, hey, if we're making a game out of never-to-be-realised wishes, I want Kameo on my Cube!!!

Lawyers seem to be able to stand it. But, then, they spend years getting a Degree in heartlessness..
You forgot "Netcraft says Asheron's Call is dead!"

Then we hardly need a whole lot of computers to see them!
