I agree with you in general. Though mankind went for perhaps 250k yrs. without medications such as we have now,
the life span was very short, society as it existed was very basic.
We now live 3-5 times longer, complex social issues combined with the awareness of the world present
new challenges to maintaining mental stability.
I suspect in early times, a person not capable of normal interaction, was soon departed from life.
How many millions of humans lived horrible lives due to war? I was one of them. Just look at
the many men and women returning from our present conflicts, suffering the lingering effects
of trauma.
Of course , and I know it from the drugs gone wild era of the '60's, that misuse is an ongoing issue.
Then too, factor in a world population approaching 7billion humans is a great departure from our
overall history.
Some of these 'drugs' actually provide balance in brain chemistry. I take antidepressants. Wish I had them available when I was young.
To talk about drugs in an indifferent fashion is an insult to everyone.
Every American has received benefit in some form from chemistry. The drugs not only keep us alive, they also alleviate mental anguish
for millions. Anti-psychotics are but one of many that offer the individual the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Knowing how various chemistry functions in the brain has brought new possibilities for a better life.
That is equivalent to saying we should not use lithium batteries in view of the need to properly dispose of them. CFL's are a bridge toward LED very high efficiency
lighting. CFL's do in fact outlast the ancient filament technology along with considerable energy savings. I could see incandescent bulbs for special purposes where heat is the main goal.
That's like saying, "There's no gas-powered car ban. Sure - you can have a gas powered car... What was that?... Yes, it's true that you can't buy or sell a car like that in the United States anymore unless it gets 100MPG, but.... What?... *Sigh* Yeah, yeah, yeah - it's true that after decades of research and effort by the auto industry no 100% gas-powered car has even come that close to that number, but it's not a car ban. Are you listening this time? IT'S... NOT... A... BAN! Man... Stupid teabaggers need to get an education or something..."
As for the car analogy, even at 100mpg, you still only use one quart to go and three are wasted as heat and friction.
I just saw an article pointing out an effort in Texas to go around this light bulb efficiency mandate by producing and selling the bulbs within the state.
I believe this has merit. This is the same argument to allow medicinal marijuana in California, and avoid firearm controls and taxes in Montana. The federal government is only empowered to regulate commerce among the states, not within them. If the lamps never enter or leave the state then the federal government has no jurisdiction.
The Terrorists have won! They never claimed they could beat physically, rather drive us to the point of insane behavior.
