The same physical space required to house 41k servers is astronomical, then once you add power consumption into the equation, there really is no comparision. Heck, if you bought two main frames (one for redundancy) the cost benefit is still phenominal.
I guess the point I'm trying to get at is that even though the mainframe is expensive, it could easily pay for itself in less than a year in the right webhosting environment.
It wouldn't be that difficult really. If they can track the watermark back to a particular manufacturer then the manufacturer will have the SN and the outlet that it was sold to on file. They then go to the retailer and try and find out who the SN belongs to.
The only potential way around it I could foresee is to buy the equipment from a computer show and pay cash for it.
Errr....Did Mr. Stephens give you permission to post his work address, phone #, and e-mail addresses? It'd be rather ironic if he hadn't considering this whole article is about privacy....
You all are a tad premature. All the page says at the moment is that his page has been removed because someone (no names mentioned) had it removed because it violated a supposed copyright.
No mention of being sued personally. No mention of lawyers involved. (Yet).
Lets see how this develops before we start screaming about lawyers.
From the article, he was caught trying to solicit sex with a minor. Major no-no. Then, he gave his consent to have his harddrive searched. They then found kiddie porn on it! Even worse.
The FBI certainly didn't put the porn on his machine so he can't try an entrapment defense.
However, since he's probably quite well off due to his investments and severance packages from Sun plus any others, he could probably pay for a very good defense team. OJ anyone?
Lets also not forget that he's innocent until the court has convicted him.
I use something like this already except my ISP calls it a dynamic-shell account. I dial in and connect like any other user but then I'm able to telnet to the server.
I find it extremely useful. I can check news and e-mail before downloading it and trash any unwanted messages. In addition, I can set up procmail filters if I ever really need to. I can also edit my html on the server rather than having to ftp any changes. All this and no additional charge per month.
On the downside of this is that you now have another account that can be cracked. Though this isn't too bad because my ISP knows what its doing when it comes to security.
I definitely have to say that I'm glad I have my account.
There are multiple benefits from this.
