Well, one reason is it has a similar code base as *nix platforms which is important to me. I have many OSS tools normally found on *nix running on my PowerBook G4 and even have a KDE GUI running if I want it even though I have a duel boot with Linux on it.
Plus you get to vote with your money; that is, give it to Apple instead of Microsoft. And Apple doesn't appear to be out to eliminate OSS which I like. Those are reasons enough for me.
Note the GUI API's are closed in Apple not the underlying kernel.
