whether people are mostly visiting the major media companies' sites or are seeing more independent stuff
I agree with this statement, and would speculate that it is more the latter, at least with the Slashdot crowd.
However, even going to something like msnbc.com online is better than watching msnbc on tv for most people because you can read the stories you want when you want without sitting through all the garbage.
I've considered myself a libertarian ever since I learned what it actaully means in a political philosophy class I took in college. Unfortunately, I live in Florida, where EVERY vote counts, down to the last hanging chad.
What we really need is a system that supports more than 2 parties fairly. Until then it will always be a wasted vote.
If you are familiar with any image processing algorithms then you might find digital zooming easier to swallow.
There is a lot of mathematics and statistics involved.
In fact, it may not only smooth out but actually create rough edges not in the original. Think of the case recently where the girl was kidnapped and the FBI enhanced the kidnapper's image from the crappy surveliance tape.
The article doesn't specify if it zooms a frozen screen (like a paused image) or during a sequence. Either way it could use past information from previous image frames to enhance the result.
Its one of those things that you need to actually see to believe the hype.
This description of school is similiar to how paul graham describes school in his essay "Why Nerds are Unpopular" http://www.paulgraham.com/nerds.html
He says:
... they were just holding pens within this fake world. Officially the purpose of schools is to teach kids. In fact their primary purpose is to keep kids locked up in one place for a big chunk of the day so adults can get things done. And I have no problem with this: in a specialized industrial society, it would be a disaster to have kids running around loose.
This is more the way I viewed school. It never occurred to me that this is in fact the way it was designed from the start. In retrospect though, it makes perfect sense.

Take the test, Are you a Libertarian? Its only 10 questions and pretty darn accurate.
$how do i read a file from my floppy? "mount?" who woulda thought.
The problem is knowing where to look sometimes. I am still learning useful commands.
