  1. Bacteria? on U.S. Nuclear Cleanup Carries Major Risks · · Score: 0, Offtopic

A bit of an O-T thread - A very, very long time ago (10 years?), I read a news story that someone, somewhere in the World was developing a bacteria that could actually "eat" nuclear waste. As I remember, it was at a very slow rate, but it seemed to be pretty effective? Does anyone remember this project, or know what happened to it?

...as I have ultimate control over the network. I do my best to help my users out, but I get mad when they shout at me without listening to what I have to say (y'know a fax machine works better when it's plugged in? But try getting *that* across to some people) The more they shout and are unreasonable, the more "annoying" I get. I lock their systems down, ban their favourite websites, and set everyone's desktops to strawberry milkshake pink.

Most educational packages appear to be aimed at Windows. I know at my school (which was all girl), there's no way we could have had anything other than Windows. We used to have a couple of Macs, but they were used even less than the Windows machines, so we threw them out. I think particularly with girls, when it comes to computers, most will not use something that they don't know. In my schools case, it was hard enough to persuade them to use the systems that they did know, without giving them something completely unknown. Some clever sod (not me!) put Redhat onto my friends laptop because windows corrupted and he thought it would be a good idea....she never used her laptop again because she felt it was far too complicated (note she didn't even switch the laptop on to have a look....it was a preconceived idea which I think a lot of people have in their heads!) --Aranel

In the case of a crash I don't want an stupid clip to appear and ask me if I want that the airbag is released. I've actually seen quite a few crashed Fiats (quite a few nasty ones), and I've only seen one where the airbag has actually gone off. Maybe MS might be able to do something useful and actually *make* the airbags go off when the car crashes (although knowing MS, the airbags would probably go off at will, while you are driving down the motorway)

Fiat's rock. My Tipo used to regularly do 999MPH (it had an electronic dashboard). The Windows (no pun intended) wouldn't close unless someone was leaning on them. My coupe had dodgy wiring in the boot, so I got to be part of the mafia for the day and shut my mechanic in the boot :o) But if MS get involved....there's no way I'm buying another Fiat!!! Sarah

I'm not sure...sometimes you have the best of intentions but you don't always present those intentions in the best of ways - maybe what's happened in this case? I think this isn't sending out the right signals - they have done the Uni a favour by showing them how insecure the network is. If anyone other student now breaks the security, they are not going to want to inform the Uni. I know for one that there's no way I would tell them if I found out - not if I was going to get disciplined and fined (and I remember how poor I was as a student!!) I'd wait until some kiddy scripter got in and did some damage and then shake my head in kind of "ahh, it had to happen" kinda way... --Sarah
