There are several packages that I'll miss if non-free was removed. I'll miss the Sun Java parts, the and a loot of software dealin with GIF images, RSA, IDEA encryption, and some other things that are crippels by US laws. There are a loot of other program that I consider as free as the GPL that are in the non-free section. The limitations are somewhat differente from those in the GPL licence but not that different.
I does not like even more diversion of where to get packagres from my Debian system. To have non-free and contrib (Contrib has to removed as well as it can't depend on something that doesn't exists, or?) would still make Debian a loot less usefull for a loot of persons. Alomost all code i have from non-free are almost like the BSD copyright but expressed in one persosne own words. Maybe makingint not DSGF free and as no-one yet has tried to figure out if that lience too are DSGF-Free it's so far non-free.
Changing the binary for ls, telnet or something else in there system. No reaction at all. They and every most other software developers have changed the default binary and or source base. So why not Debian? Peronaly I was a little sceptical but that actuallt not the worst chnage in Debian history.
This argument does I don't understand, if anything the BSD style license is MORE free that GPL style. I have problems understanding why everyone keeps calling GPL style for free, THE limitations and non-free parts of this licenes are almost the hardest ones.
There are a loot of situations in real life where GPL's restrictions to the software freedoom hinders it's usability. (I.m.h.o. the main problems are that it has restrictions to linking...)
I don't know of the US laws but here in Sweden it's illegeal to repost any infoormation recived in mail (at least smail) to any person without the premision of the author.
Last time (probably last year about this time) when BSA reported the same stats, at least for sweden, they counted my Debian box to have one pirate copy of a operationg system (Windows), One of a office program (Office?), 1/3 of a email program and so on. BSA/SPA have a personal interest of getting the numbers as high as possible. A high count of piracy helps them so get harder punishment of software copying. (As the same way as they count losses, there clames has at least a few times been ruled to high in Swedish court, one has to coun't away the cost for creating the software when one count the losses, at least the cost for printing manulals, burning cd and so on.) Then one has to count all the pirate copies on the mashines I did install on the University (we continued to use the old versions of the program when we throu out the old hardware)
I'm proud to have a "pirate" os (Debian GNU/Linux), a "pirate" office package (Gnome+Latex)... Probably then still count priacy by taking the number of sold new machines in the contry, whisiting a number of firms studying what they have on there computers, and multiplies the number of new machines and counts away the number of sold programs in that contry. A metod almost certan to give a high rate of piracy.

But all the program were availble and free long before GNU where started. And could easy be replased by an alternative. I have had plans to make a BSD / Linux installation, starting from Debian. The replacemant shuld not be that hard i think, I got the idea when i read rms article but have not had time to create a test host yet.
Any server could be put out of service as long as one does not care about getting traced, and have supperior net connection. That is not a security problem. Every server has a maximun number of simultaionus job i can process, (it doesn't exists any computer with unlimited bandwith and unlimited cpu power). If you have access to "several" good connected sites you can always use up these resources for any site. There is noi possibility to stop this. The important thing is that after the "attac" stops ther server resumes work as usall...
Honestly, though, the people who write perl and tcl/tk code in linux are the ones who would be writing VB if they used Windows.
Honestly, the most programera of perl are very experiences C-programers that have found a faster way of developing small utlilites. Perl is one of the most fexible lanugaes around. When it cames to tcl/tk I have also used it a couple of times, as rapid development has been needed. I don't think any of this languages has anything in common with VB. (That I have used one, to help a friend, not a fun experience)
As for tcl/tk I have only one word Exmh, a mail system in a class for it self. I have not seen any better more flexible mail system. But that there are "VB" programera in Un*x too, I just don't think they use perl, or tcl/tk. I guess a loot of them use Java, and the rest are using C++.
It don't the Swedish politicans are that smart, smart and high IQ in this matter is something you can't give them credit for.
The usall way do hadle this matter in Sweden is to create a new lay that are almost the same as the version in the US. With the arguments that US is a leding technology contry, everything they do MUST be right. I recomend that you leave for finland or south-africa instead. They still have a little more clear view in this matters.
We jst got a new nice law over here that sais if I use your name inb this post I have to get a written statement from you that it is ok and you don't mind me using your name in a database.

YOUR code is STILL on your own drive, or does you always remove all your copies when distributing?
