I've seen and tried that monitor...It'll never be as good as a Sony or any of the more expensive ones. You can have your TNT2 or the latest card, but if the monitor is crap, then it's all for nothing. I'll never understand this arguement that PC users are willing to buy the best video cards for the cheapest systems. Why not split the money and get a monitor that doesn't look dull or is brigher and a half decent card. It'll do you much better. Granted the PC is cheaper...but is it better?
Now, are you talking about the zif or a PCI upgrade in the older ones. I think PCI upgrade works, but the zif will not because of the power difference in the chips. Not sure about this, but that's what I was talking about. Just an independant theory actually, nothing from apple. Oh well not worrying about it, I'm on an Ultra box, so it doesn't affect me...
Well, if anyone were to read the specs, they would see that it's a matter of power. The new G4(not based on the G3, but the 604) requires a new power supply and so Apple decided to block upgrades instead of get themselves into possible legal trouble with a bunch of people calling them up and asking why their computers won't work anymore. Go read the specs about it before you spread ugly rumors.
fine fine;P haha still all macs have 10/100 Ethernet so I don't know what you're complaining about in the speed department. Also, ISO 9660 can be read by all macs and all macs have cd rom drives. I still say that a $4 cross over cable is the cheapest option. plus you don't have to buy disks or store them or even search for them.
how about ftp it somewhere...:) I know you're arguement already....what if there's no internet connection...well dammit...if you're that far out of it...you might as well get a typewriter...paper is far more useful than a floppy drive. I mean everyone has paper and can use paper. It's the ultimate media. Everyone can read it(not as a language, but can view it)...and any data loss is purely your fault.
Look you can't live in a limited world. You're talking about one case where I'm lugging my G4 around everywhere. Even so, the cross over cable is a muuch better option than a floppy. It's a single cable. Just do a peer to peer and wahlah you have your files. All macs have built in Ethernet. Most PC's have it now too. So quit complaining or come up with a better scenario.
I can't believe that in this day and age, people just don't make a cross-over cable, especially if they have a mac. It's just too easy and too fast. floppy disks and sneakernet is just too much hassle. And for the price of the floppeis and the drive, I can get a hub and cables. Hook up even more computers. This floppy arguement must really stop. The only thing a floppy is good for anymore is to boot that windows computer when it's crapping out...and even that use is fading. Try a zip even, or an imation superdrive, still I argue the network is the way to go. Oh the humanity...let it die in peace.
well before all these people get their panties wadded up on the stuff apple said....go read about the g4...I think you'll see it's as fast as they say. Remebre it's more than just Mhz that matters...
128 bit vector processsing.....droooooooool
multi core(though not supported, yet)....droooooooool
the MacOS allows for the use of single clicks. Just change it so everything is displayed as a button rather than icons. This is true for every version after 8.0(maybe earlier, but I couldn't say for sure). Granted, it's not the default that is set, but it can me made so that it is system wide and very quickly.
Though your point is very valid, it's not software that I'm arguing about. I"m arguing that the community could splinter, fall apart, or become engaged their own desires, ignoring what happens to the community. Granted, right now we are held together and willing to help each other with every patch and driver. What happens when greed takes over. Will someone stop the help and charge for it. Will we see more and more custom linux versions that are not covered by the GPL? My arguement is that we are a society. Like all societies, we have needs and wants. Now agreed software is infinite, but what goes into the kernal and what direction linux goes it is not. Decisions are made(i.e. support this, drop that, update this, lose that...). In any case, will greed oust the way linux is developed, by all?
let's see how some other things styacked up against greed
Capitalism(not democracy) vs. Greed
no contest, they would help each tother and do. No arguements needed here. You could almost argue they are the same.
Socialism vs. Greed
I believe is most what leads to facism. greed has a way of turning a government that is trying to help it's people into an over powering ruling part. Most governments fall around socialism, some more communistic and some more democratic. In any case, I argue that greed leads socialism to fail.
Communism vs. Greed
We all know communism lost this one(even though after many hours of playing Civilization, I have concluded Communism is the best form of government...though that is something to be argued at another time). Communism might have survived if everyone was in it for the greater society and not themselves. We know this is a dream though and in the end, greed wins out. I would argue that the OS movement is most like communism, and unless steps are made to ensure that everyone remain good-hearted, we may suffer a similar fate. The GPL and others like it are our constitution that keep everyone good-natured. Even so, these documents are not binding and could be the undoing of the community.
One could also argue that the community is much like a democracy. I argue that in reality, we aren't. Our leaders aren't voted in. Our documents weren't ratified by us(though we do have representitives, sort of). We don't vote on how the OS movement should go. So I stick with my arguement that we are most like a Communist Society, all working for the better of everyone. But we had better watch out, for greed may lurk.

enough of my griping...

goto Subject;
you know slashdot misplaced this, it was supposed to be 2 threads up(or maybe it was me). I'm pretty sure it was in the right place :)
All this code is getting to my head.

Actually, I have a minor correction...

okay...back to what we were talking about....
A job is something you do, but do not really care about and get paid for it
A career is something you do and you really are interested in it and you get paid for it.
A hobby is something you do and are really interested in it, but don't get paid for it.
...could go on...but I think the point is clear....use the proper word. Just because you capitalize a J in job does not make it any more important.
